Netflix - Silverlight/Pipelight no longer required with latest chrome

Using the latest dev/unstable version of Chrome (v38+), linux users can now watch netflix without the need to faff about installing silverlight/pipelight.

This is because Google, MS and Netflix and others have apparently been working on HTML5 extensions which satisfy content providers with respect to DRM.

If using linux, you still need a custom user-agent string (it needs to match the chrome-dev version exactly), and you need to set your Netlfix prefs to use HTML5, rather than Silverlight.

The custom UA string for the current (16/8) dev build is: "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; Win 64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/38.0.2121.3 Safari/537.36" (without quotes).

Details here & I can confirm it's working for me under Arch linux, using "chrome-chrome-dev" from AUR: https://plus.google.com/104912707432334 … gnbmo63xVa

This works perfectly.  The only odd bit of setup I had to perform was to choose the correct audio output device for chrome in pavucontrol.   Before that pulse was outputting to a dummy output.

Re: Netflix - Silverlight/Pipelight no longer required with latest chrome

It's been working for me for the past week, but I'm not going to uninstall wine-pipelight just yet. There's no guarantee that it will continue to work at the moment.

I'd quite like to see Firefox working, too (it doesn't, I tried). I really don't like Chrome.

Agree with all of this. I used to like chrome(ium), but their ditching of NPAPI breaks one too many things for me, so it's back to Firefox. Speaking of Firefox, they've got their sync working better now, which was one benefit of chrome(ium) for me.

The good news is that Mozilla has apparently accepted the necessary HTML5 extensions as part of Firefox, and so (along with Safari in OSX Yosemite) this should be rolling out to more browsers and platforms in due course.

Try it and see! I'm not sure they've baked in the required HTML 5 extensions.

Re: Netflix - Silverlight/Pipelight no longer required with latest chrome

On the latest Chromium stable (37) it tries to load, but complains "We cannot find all the required components to play Netflix on this device. Please visit chrome://components, locate the WidevineCdm component, and click the "Check for update" button." So I'm guessing Chromium doesn't include the DRM extension. I'll give it a go with Google Chrome stable and see if that does the trick.

Confirmed!
Using Google Chrome 37 from the AUR with User Agent "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/38.0.2114.2 Safari/537.36" works! I'm having playback issues currently, but I'm also running Arch in a VM with my internet tunneled through a socks proxy, so I'm not sure if the player is to blame.

I wonder if it's possible to extract the DRM plugin from Google Chrome for use with Chromium (a la chromium-pepper-flash).

Change the chrome version number  in your user agent to match the chrome version - should fix it.

Re: Netflix - Silverlight/Pipelight no longer required with latest chrome

Here Netflix is working fine with google-chrome-dev (Version 39.0.2138.3 dev (64-bit))
However CPU usage is high, after some minutes temperature go to 85 or higher with a Core Duo.

The fact is that GPU acceleration is disabled for video on this version of Chrome.
I have tried to launch with "/usr/bin/google-chrome-unstable -ignore-gpu-blacklist netflix.com" but the result is almost the same.

Re: Netflix - Silverlight/Pipelight no longer required with latest chrome

As an update, a user-agent switcher is no longer required i.e. Netflix HTML5 works natively with google-chrome-stable (currently at 38.0.2125.104 at the time of this post) with the default UA string.

Nice (although we can debate the merits of DRM in HTML5 ad infinitum).

Re: Netflix - Silverlight/Pipelight no longer required with latest chrome

It doesn't work for me. I installed extra/chromium 38.0.2125.111-1. I set my Netflix playback preference to HTML5. I get this error when I try to watch anything:

Netflix wrote:

Whoops, something went wrong...

The WidevineCdm component is not available for Linux. What should I do next?

That component is proprietary and thus not included in Chromium. You need Google Chrome from the AUR.
