[SOLVED] Segmentation Fault on gscan2pdf

I originally installed gscan2pdf in March 2014 to scan double-sided documents and was pleased with the results. It took a little while to get a successful installation, though; see my post at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1399303.

I again went to gscan2pdf a few days ago and encountered problems. Trying to start it form the Application Menu gave no apparent response.  Launching it from the command line gave "Segmentation fault" and no other messages. Reading the recent (~June) posts on https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/gsca … mments=all indicates others have encountered similar problems and perl 5.20 may be involved; I have perl 5.20 installed.

Following one of the ideas on the AUR gscan2pdf page, I tried two approaches to removing and reinstalling gscan2pdf. First, I ran:

$ sudo pacman -Rcs gscan2pdf
$ aurget S --nodiscard gscan2pdf
$ sudo pacman -U gscan2pdf/gscan2pdf-1.2.5-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

The result was removing and reinstalling these packages:

perl-html-parser-3.71-3
perl-html-tagset-3.20-4
perl-locale-gettext-1.05-11
perl-log-log4perl-1.44-1
perl-try-tiny-0.22-1
unpaper-5.1-1
gscan2pdf-1.2.5-1

Starting gscan2pdf from the command line still gave the "Segmentation fault" message. Next, I tried removing gscan2pdf (with its attendant packages) in the above manner, then reinstalling the six perl packages and unpaper individually with pacman, and finally reinstalling gscan2pdf. Same "Segmentation fault" result.

Some on the AUR gscan2pdf page suggested running 'gscan2pdf --log=file.log', but this gave the "Segmentation fault" message and produced no log file.

I run Arch Linux 3.16.1-1 and xcfe 4.10 with regular updates through pacman -Syu, though I admit to not yet replacing the many LibreOffice components with extra/...-still-... packages.

I would be very grateful if anyone has recommendations for resolving this problem. Many thanks.

Re: [SOLVED] Segmentation Fault on gscan2pdf

Hello,

did you try to run https://git.server-speed.net/users/flo/ … ackages.sh ? Please refer
to https://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail … 26359.html for the instructions.

What is the output ? Which perl version do you have (I mean the package)?

Tristelune --

Thanks for the direction (and quick reply). I saw find-broken in several other messages, but had no idea what it meant.

In answer to your second question:

$ pacman -Q perl
perl 5.20.0-5

I downloaded and ran the bash script with the following result:

$ Computer/SysConfig/find-broken-perl-packages.sh
Computer/SysConfig/find-broken-perl-packages.sh: line 28: module-to-dist.pl: command not found
results are in "/tmp/find-broken-perl-package.HTrqDIbY"

The results in the ...HTrqDIbY directory are:

pacman.txt:
perl-readonly-xs
perl-sane

raw.txt:
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/auto/Readonly/XS/XS.so
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/auto/Sane/Sane.so

perlmodules.txt:
Readonly::XS
Sane

The perl-dists.txt file is empty due to the line 28 error. Should I chase down module-to-dist.pl and install it?

Looks like I have problems with two perl modules.  What do I do to correct them?

Re: [SOLVED] Segmentation Fault on gscan2pdf

Post #26 from juster (top of page 2) in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=182394&p=2 suggests identifying "all unofficial (aka. foreign), platform dependent, perl modules" with:

    pacman -Qml | fgrep 'usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl' | awk '{print $1}' | sort -u | tee badpkgs

The (somewhat reassuring) output for my case is:

    perl-readonly-xs
    perl-sane

Further, running:

    cat badpkgs | xargs aurget --noconfirm -S

tries to reinstall the two packages from the AUR, but appears to run into the same didn't-run-pacman problem as have other of my perl installs. I broke this down into two stages and ran the following:

    aurget --nodiscard -S perl-readonly-xs
    sudo pacman -U ~/perl-readonly-xs/perl-readonly-xs-1.05-2-any.pkg.tar.xz
    aurget --nodiscard -S perl-sane
    sudo pacman -U ~/perl-sane/perl-sane-0.05-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

which state in their respective pacman runs:

    warning: perl-readonly-xs-1.05-2 is up to date -- reinstalling
    warning: perl-sane-0.05-3 is up to date -- reinstalling

but otherwise appear to execute to completion of their installations.

I am pleased to say that gscan2pdf indeed starts up and scans now. HURRAH!!

Re: [SOLVED] Segmentation Fault on gscan2pdf

Thanks for the hints,but it still will not build.
Problem is perl-readonly, build crashes with error message:

Module::Build will be removed from the Perl core distribution in the next major release. Please install it from CPAN. It is being used at Build.PL, line 12.
Parse::CPAN::Meta version 1.4414 required--this is only version 1.4405 at /usr/share/perl5/core_perl/CPAN/Meta.pm line 60.
