Re: [SOLVED] No sound in steam, works in Firefox

Welcome to Arch Linux.

Perhaps you should tell us a bit more about your system.  Which kernel are you using?  (Post the output of uname -a  )
Also, there seems to be a bit of confusion about the architecture.   That is part of the reason I ask for the kernel specifics.

Then, there is this:

ERROR: ld.so: object '/home/user/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/gameoverlayrenderer.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32): ignored.

Now, I know little about steam, but when I read that, it looks like you are trying to load a library that came from Ubuntu that is for a different architecture than your Arch (?) box.
So, we also need specifics on how you installed steam.

Also, are you using Pulseaudio?
Your output complained alsa could not find default.  What is the output of aplay -L

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in steam, works in Firefox

Hi and thank you!

uname -a gives this

Linux Wotan 3.16.1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Aug 14 07:40:19 CEST 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux

In regard to the ubuntu thing, as far as I am concerned that is normal behavoir (though I might be wrong on this, but this is what I know). This is just what the folder is called as Steam is not officially supported on Arch.

I installed steam through the official multilib repository using "pacman -S steam".

I've got both pulseaudio and alsa installed, I know that much.

At last:

aplay -L

Also, I just tested a non-steam game; Minecraft, which had the same problem. Game was fine but no sound at all.

Thanks a lot!

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in steam, works in Firefox

Okay, fair enough.  Like I said, I know almost nothing of Steam.

Lets take a look at the output of systemctl status
Also, please post the contents of /etc/asound.conf

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in steam, works in Firefox

There is no card 2 on your system. Delete that /etc/asound.conf, this is a very bad way to set the default sound card, unless you know what you are doing.*

 If you want to mainly use pulseaudio, install pulseaudio-alsa package.

Edit: * Even if it was set to the hdmi card, it would not work, since there is no device 0 for that card. You use number references instead of name references, also discouraged. Not to mention blocking other applications.

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in steam, works in Firefox

I deleted /etc/asound.conf and now the situation got (a little bit) worse.

Sound still works in firefox, and it still doesn't work in games, but I can't change the sound level anymore in Gnome. Well, I can change it visually but nothing happens. The volume level notification popup thingy also now says "HDMI / DisplayPort 3" (it didn't say anything before) beneath the speaker icon.

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in steam, works in Firefox

Did you reboot after installing pulseaudio-alsa? Are there any other configuration files? Like ~/.asoundrc?

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in steam, works in Firefox

Do you actually use the hdmi? Do you get sound from speaker-test with pulseaudio killed, check if it is killed, since it can respawn.

speaker-test -c 2 -t wav -D plug:"dmix:{CARD PCH DEV 0}"
speaker-test -c 2 -t wav -D plug:"dmix:{CARD NVidia DEV 3}"

If an error occurs, post the output here. No sound application must be used at the time of the test.

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in steam, works in Firefox

I don't even have anything-HDMI connected. I have 1 displayport monitor and two DVI monitors connected, and my speakers are connected through a standard jack cable to my motherboard.

The first command gives working sound regardless of whether pulseaudio has been killed or not.
The second command gives nothing in either case.

Still no game sound regardless of pulseaudio state.

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in steam, works in Firefox

Then change the default PA device to PCH. Should it not show up, I would delete ~/.config/pulse, reboot. It seems you have made some changes to the PA configuration, that may be partly the problem. You apparently already use dmix as default output of PA, which is not bad in itself.

Edit: Certain applications may need to be configured to use the pulseaudio driver. Check PAs wiki, for setting the default sound card per configuration file directly. Use PCH,0 as default.

Well this is odd. The other card doesn't even show up in neither the Gnome3 Audio settings nor in Pavucontrol. I can't change it.

Did you delete ~/.config/pulse? If so, why not report it here? Are there multiple instances of PA? Any other sound servers?

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in steam, works in Firefox

Yes, I did delete ~/.config/pulse

As far as I've been able to understand now, changing the default pulseaudio audio device requires changing the following in /etc/pulse/default.pa:

### Make some devices default
#set-default-sink output
#set-default-source input

to

### Make some devices default
set-default-sink PCH,0
#set-default-source input

Is this correct?

Running "pacmd list-sinks" only the Nvidia HDMI card shows up, by the way, and running "pacmd set-default-sink PCH,0" gives "Sink PCH,0 does not exist".

Or am I completely on the wrong track? smile

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in steam, works in Firefox

My bad, that was an alsa syntax reference.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu … are_device
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Softwar … /#index4h3

If you have no other alsa configuration, then PCH should be card 0, and therefore default with device 0, and therefore using the default dmix, which the first link refers to.

Edit: Search for PAs issues detecting a hda compliant sound card and your particular one. Just to be sure run 'fuser -v /dev/snd/*' again, '/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p' should not be used by anything with PA kiled and should be listed by pacmd.

Edit2: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … ug/1363710 probably related. Check dmesg and journalctl for anything audio/hda/alsa/pulseaudio related.

Edit3: Did you change modprobe options for this sound card? Are there any alsa related files in /etc/modprobe.d?

Edit4: Please provide:

lspci -vnn | grep -A1 -i audio;
cat /proc/asound/modules;
systool -vm snd_hda_intel;

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in steam, works in Firefox

Hi again

Editing /etc/pulse/default.pa as suggested in your first link gave Sound in Super Meat Boy on steam, but not in Minecraft or wine applications. I also still can't control the volume level.

This is the only relevant thing I get from running dmesg:

[    3.035707] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: irq 45 for MSI/MSI-X
[    3.035802] snd_hda_intel 0000:01:00.1: Disabling MSI

[    3.047299] sound hdaudioC0D0:      Line=0x1a

There's nothing relevant in journalctl seemingly, and I havn't changed the modprobe options for anything.

This is getting kind of ridiculous :\

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in steam, works in Firefox

speaker-test -c 2 -t wav -D plug:"dmix:{CARD PCH DEV 0}"
speaker-test -c 2 -t wav -D plug:default

Do these work simultaneously? The first should go directly through alsa and the second through PA first. So 'fuser -v /dev/snd/*' should show speaker-test and pulseaudio on pcmC0D0p. Does steam show up in volume control panel of PA? How is Minecraft set up? Does it use alsa, oss or pulseaudio as output? Or something through SDL? See if setting/exporting SDL_AUDIODRIVER=pulseaudio or SDL_AUDIODRIVER=pulse helps.

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in steam, works in Firefox

The above commands work simultaneously yes (in two seperate terminals). Neither of them respond to changing volume level though.

Steam doesn't show up in Pavucontrol. I believe minecraft uses something called OpenAL, but I'm not sure.

This is the output of the fuser command when running both tests:

[Wotan:~]$ fuser -v /dev/snd/*
                     USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0:  user    2143 F.... plugin-containe
                     user    4209 F.... plugin-containe
                     user    4761 F.... speaker-test
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p:   user    2143 F...m plugin-containe
                     user    4209 F...m plugin-containe
                     user    4760 F...m speaker-test
                     user    4761 F...m speaker-test
/dev/snd/timer:      user    2143 f.... plugin-containe
                     user    4209 f.... plugin-containe
                     user    4760 f.... speaker-test
                     user    4761 f.... speaker-test

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in steam, works in Firefox

Where is pulseaudio? The second one should go through PA, which should be present, the suspend-on-idle module should be deactivated and unloaded, so that PA stays there.

Search for ~/.openalrc.

Just to make sure, what is the content of /etc/asound.conf now?

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in steam, works in Firefox

I don't have a ~/.openalrc.

I don't have an /etc/asound.conf anymore as I deleted it, but I have an /etc/asound.conf~

/etc/asound.conf~:

cat /etc/asound.conf\~
pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 2
}

ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card 2
}

As you can see, this just shows the content of the old file...

Did you reboot after installing pulseaudio-alsa? Are there any other configuration files? Like ~/.asoundrc?

ategor wrote:

Yes, I rebooted, and there is no such file unfortunately

Why is that package not installed‽

emeres wrote:

If you want to mainly use pulseaudio, install pulseaudio-alsa package.

Search for it, search for information how to create it.

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in steam, works in Firefox

Then this is a separate issue. Do you have /etc/asound.conf.pacnew? If so move/rename it to asound.conf. If it is not there, then put this into /etc/asound.conf:

# Use PulseAudio by default
pcm.!default {
  type pulse
  fallback "sysdefault"
  hint {
    show on
    description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
  }
}

ctl.!default {
  type pulse
  fallback "sysdefault"
}

# vim:set ft=alsaconf:

Edit: PA should be running permanently, I already noted disabling suspend-on-idle module. Please repeat both speaker-tests, one should show up in fuser only, the other in PA volume control panel.
