Since upgrading to 2.6.15, using the config file I always do, /dev/dvd cannot be found (my DVD drives aren't present anywhere in /dev, either as dvd | dvd1 | hdc | hdd...), and nor can my sata hard drive be recognised.
I tried mkinitrd auto, and nothing of use happened, it just gave me some spiel, and then 'ERROR: All of your loopback devices are in use!' . Any suggestions?

Did you apply the uevent patch?

..Que?
Umm... no... I only applied a single patch, to update to release 4 of the kernel. What's this uevent patch? Do I definitely need it?

I think it is necessary. I had to apply it otherwise I got kernel panics. But I am not sure exactly why it is necessary. I too am curious as to why.

Definitely necessary - have a look here. Search the forum for uevent for more info, and if you still want more, there were a few threads on the ML too.
