Hi,
I'm trying to make X Server work, apparently. The last time I tried, I installed xorg-server, xorg-xinit and xf86-video-vesa. They say the default graphics driver should suffice. That is, I decided to start with one simple configuration. I take it, X Server can start without GNOME or whatever. So, I ran xstart and here's what X Server said:

I've had this problem myself with the vesa driver, albeit using the integrated Intel chipset. Even when adding the xorg=vesa or xforcevesa commands to the syslinux bootloader I get the same error as you. Weird thing is that the vesa driver obviously loads as indicated by the change in resolution when the system boots.
My own suspicion is that a xorg configuration file may be required that specifically states vesa should be used, but I am not certain. Sorry I couldn't be much more help, and am hoping someone more competent / experienced may be able to shed some light on this!

Why vesa and not nouveau or the nvidia blob? Yeah in theory vesa should work, but in my experience it tends to not work with KMS drivers. So either install xf86-video-nouveau or nvidia-utils.
Edit: Though looking at the exact error:
[ 384.766] (WW) xf86ReadBIOS: Failed to open /dev/mem (Permission denied)/dev/mem looks like this:
crw-r----- 1 root kmem 1, 1 Sep 6 20:16 /dev/memSo if vesa requires access to it, it'll only work when X is run as root, which isn't the case anymore (see the recent news announcement on the main page).

I also would recommend nouveau or nvidia (personally I'd favor the former) but if for some reason you can't or wont use these, I'd say don't bother with vesa, and use xf86-video-fbdev - it has served me far better in the past than vesa. But this is quite subjective as I know next to nothing about video drivers.

Not an Installation issue, moving to Apps and DEs...

I am wondering then if VESA may have had its day as the de-facto fallback driver since x is no longer run as root. If so, then that would have serious implications for users where their primary driver fails for whatever reason (e.g. dodgy update).
I'll give fbdev a crack and see if it has the same issue as VESA before reporting back.
Offline
Rather than fbdev, modesetting is the modern fallback driver. In fact, one of the X devs wants to put xf86-video-modesetting into the X source tree, then add DRI and glamor support to it. This would eliminate the need for hardware specific X drivers - KMS would take care of modesetting and mesa would take care of 2d accel.

Interesting! Thanks again, Gusar. Well, guess I'll be playing with KMS too...

I'm not really particular about using vesa. I tried different variants, but all of them failed. For now, I just won't to make it work. In any possible way. So, I installed xf86-video-nouveau. And here's what's in the log:

Server terminated successfully (0)It works. But it had nothing to do, so it shut down. Give it something to run.
PS. This is quite common, some people install only X and nothing else, then say it doesn't work. But it's a display server. If you don't give it apps to display, what do you expect X to do by itself?

Indeed, I installed gnome group, added `exec gnome-session` to ~/.xinitrc and am writing this post from inside GNOME's web browser. Thanks guys ![]()

Speaking of which, the wiki says: "To determine which client to run, startx will first look for ~/.xinitrc to run as a shell script. In case the user file does not exist, the system default at /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc will be used. This will start a basic environment with Twm, xclock and Xterm (assuming that the necessary packages are installed). See xinitrc for configuration details." It made me think, something should run even if I didn't install any desktop environment.
