Boot messages suddenly stopped showing up on screen during boot - these are the messages preceeded with the green [OK] and red [FAILED].
The equivalent shutdown messages still show on screen when shutting down. No change in mkinitcpio.conf or syslinux.cfg (syslinux bootloader). ....and there is no "splash" or "quiet" parameter being passed to kernel.
Missing messages most likely started after a system upgrade but not sure which package or when.
During boot I get the "Welcome to Archlinux" and some fsck messages, then the prompt for userid.
No problems with system after boot.....just not getting those system boot messages. Hate when stuff changes without knowing why.
I know about getting boot messages via journalctl, so please do not recommend.

What packages did you update?
Offline
Not sure if I understand your question.... the packages are updated via pacman -Syu at least once a week per ArchLinux repository.
I am hoping someone might know where to turn these messages back on. It is as though the "quiet" parameter is being passed to the kernel by the bootloader. This has been confirmed to not be happening.
Just my luck that noone else is having tise problem, so not getting much interest.
Ya think this would be an option in the journald.conf file or some config file. I have checked mkinitcpio, syslinux and have reloaded each with no change.
Something has told either the kernel or systemd to stop sending these messages to the screen or the screen is not listening. The login prompt (dont use a display manager) does print to the screen like normal and my system continues to operate normally.

karol was asking you for the list of packages that were in the update that changed the behaviour.
That log would be helpful.

According to this link in Archlinux documentation:
If you see no output at all in console after the initram message, this means you have the quiet parameter in your kernel line. It's best to remove it, at least the first time you boot with systemd, to see if everything is ok. Then, you will see a list [ OK ] in green or [ FAILED ] in red.
Neither the removal of "quiet" or the addition of the 'loglevel=3" kernel parameters on my fully updated archlinux system allows verbose boot messages to appear on my console.
Nothing, nada, rien, ingenting, ei mitään......

You may want to use

next time, for some of us it is easier to read instead of colorful text.
cat /proc/cmdline # to make sure

Will do. Thanks for the feedback.
Got the following:
cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=../vmlinuz-linux resume=/dev/sda7 root=/dev/sda1 rw initrd=../initramfs-linux.img

Besides the kernel options "quiet" and "loglevel", you can control what is printed to the console using the sysctl setting "kernel.printk".
http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions … intk-value
Have you modified this setting?
Offline
Tried adding kernel.printk = 4 4 1 7 and kernel.printk = 3 4 1 3 to /etc/sysctl.d/ /etc/sysctl.d/99-sysctl.conf, and rebooted after each. Still no kernel startup messages.
Keep in mind that the kernel messages do show when shutting down. They Just dont show when starting up. So whatever supports the output of these messages is missing at startup and "not" missing at shutdown. The fsck messages and Welcome messages do appear at startup. This tells me messages are going to the screen in the early startup stage. But for some reason boot type messages are silent between the Welcome and login prompt.
Might there be a systemd service that needs to be running to output these boot messages? Maybe the service got accidently disabled.
I am hoping some future package update will end this madness, but really dont like not knowing why. Hope to learn something new from somebody.
Offline
Make a systemd service fail to start at boot, something insignificant, so that it continues to boot. This should trigger systemd to force enabling messages. If the service fails according to systemctl and nothing is shown, then this might be an indication of something outside of systemd.
Offline
Created a service (testfail.service) intended to fail. Then rebooted. The following appeared in the system journal but not on console (screen).
Sep 08 17:22:09 saturn systemd[1]: testfail.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=203/EXEC
Sep 08 17:22:09 saturn systemd[1]: Failed to start service fail test.
Sep 08 17:22:09 saturn systemd[1]: Unit testfail.service entered failed state.
Something outside of systemd?
Looks like something is still preventing the kernel from sending these boot messages at startup but not shutdown.
The symptom is the same as passing "quiet" to the kernel. Very strange.
Here is a list of my services. Any services that should be enabled that are not or vesa versa?

A bugzilla report (83435) was submitted on 9/3/2014 by Andrea. Reverting to a previous version of systemd version seemed to eliminate the problem for now.
