Ayatana / new indicators - How on earth do I install them?

Hello,

Despite extensive research, I can't find any repository or packages on the AUR that are actually up to date allowing me to install indicators for such things as sound, date/time, power, network, etc.

It's incredibly annoying. I've tried the Ubuntu repository, I've tried old repositories, I've tried bzr packages from the AUR - but nothing works. And I'm desperate to actually have a functional desktop.

Does anyone know anything about this? Surely it's quite an important issue?

Note: I know Vala. If nothing surfaces, I may be tempted to spend some time making my own indicators for such things. But I really hope I don't have to do that, since I'm usually quite busy :-(

Yes, I have. The repositories are out of date and don't work with other existing packages in both the Arch repositories and the AUR. I'm using Pantheon, so clearly this is a bit of an issue. It relies heavily on indicators for control.

Would you agree that your desperation is almost entirely due to your choice of a desktop that has very little support in an Arch environment? If you really just want a functional desktop, I strongly recommend one from the official repos i.e. one that benefits from the dedication and enthusiasm of the Arch dev team.

Of course... But the only fully-blown (modern) desktops I've used that works flawlessly are Cinnamon and Gnome 3 - both based on the same code. Of course things like openbox, Mate, etc. work. But I think you'll agree they make for less than a brilliant experience.

Couldn't possibly agree with that, as I don't have the necessary experience. I'm a very happy Openbox user, but I've never used Gnome or Cinnamon, so I can't compare them.

To the contrary, most Arch users would argue just the opposite.
