Radeon HD 8750m card issues

Hello, I've just transitioned to Arch linux for over a month now. Previously I've used Arch based Manjaro Linux, and other Gentoo based distros, etc.

I've had the same problem everywhere, and that is I've been unable to find a way to get my discrete radeon card working.

I have a Samsung series 5 notebook with dual hybrid switchable graphics with both an intel and a radeon card having dynamic power management options.

Previously, I've posted in Manjaro forum while I was using their distro. Althought it didn't solve my problem but I managed to find a way to turn off discrete card using acpi_call module.

I've read on Arch wiki somewhere about installing a custom package from AUR called catalyst-total-pxp, but I'm not sure that following through the steps listed on the wiki would be good enough to fix my issue or if it would create more problems. Right now I don't really have another backup computer to fall back on so that's another problem.

But I'm willing to comply to provide more information if need be and if you guys have a fix for similar issue let me know, I'm willing to dive in to get this fixed.

I also had to downgrade to xorg-xserver 1.14 and xf86-video-intel 2.99.907 to prevent segfaults while starting X. Working well now.

On the ArchWiki page, there are repositories listed for installing the xorg group versioned 1.15. Place it above [extra] in /etc/pacman.conf and get back to us if you wish to use AMD Catalyst.

If you want to use the latest AMD Catalyst, you have to install X packages from the [xorg115] repository (replacing the newer one) because AMD Catalyst doesn't support or work with x.Org 1.16.

Yes I understand, I don't have a problem downgrading...but what exactly are the steps that I should take to make sure it doesn't break anything.

I've updated pacman after the addition & when I try to install xorg115 this is what I get:

Irenicus, did you put [xorg115] in pacman.conf as described?

If so, pacman -Syu is all that's needed to downgrade to xorg115.

The command above did the trick for me (for some reason -Syu flag doesnt downgrade to xorg-115 it just updates the system with newer versions). Anyway after that I should be good to install catalyst-total-pxp from aur right?

Okay I've followed the steps in the wiki and managed to install catalyst-total-pxp package from aur, also switched to discrete graphics using "pxp_switch_catalyst amd".

After reboot this is what i get

There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition.  It could be caused by the following.

No AMD graphics driver is installed, or the AMD driver is not functioning properly.
Please install the AMD driver appropriate for you AMD hardware, or configure using aticonfig.

After you blacklisted radeon & rebooted to CLI , remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb .
Then run the aticonfig command (see wiki) .

start x , check the output of glxinfo .
you can also try fgl_glxgears .

Okay, so this is where I'm at.

First of all, after following the wiki and getting everything installed I used this:

$ pxp_switch_catalyst amd

Switch to AMD
Checking /etc/modules-load.d/catalyst.conf for fglrx ...
grep: /etc/modules-load.d/catalyst.conf: No such file or directory
fglrx was added into /etc/modules-load.d/catalyst.conf
Switched to Catalyst

It shows that no discrete card detected, but anyway at that time I didnt blacklist radeon. But I rebooted anyway and when I booted I saw a blank screen with a fixed cursor at the top left (not a blinking cursor) instead of the login screen. There's no way I could switch to any of the TTY's either.

Now I'm back using the intel card & the applied settings. Should I consider blacklisting radeon and going for it again? Please let me know.

Yes that was done, otherwise pxp would complain about no config files, etc. I think

Sorry for the double post but one thing that I'd like to mention is that when I issue the aticonfig command this is what I get:

EDIT:

Okay so initially that was the message but later when I booted into single user mode the command above was successful in generating an xorg config file, etc.

But still I have the same problem that is I'm not able to go beyond the black screen and a static non blinking cursor on the top left. Tried blackisting radeon module in /etc/modprobe.d/ but nothing worked as of now.
