Lost resolution for desktop(Solved with Vesa Driver. Not ATI)

Had KDE arranged for 1024x768 resolution but have lost that setting and the only pair of settings provided are:

      Screen 1         (Screen0 in xorg?)
      848 x 480  or
      640 x 480

Don't know what caused the loss which occured after installing archck kernel.

Re: Lost resolution for desktop(Solved with Vesa Driver. Not ATI)

The drivers are ati r200 8500LE and have been useable in this computer with xorg 7 and at 1024 x 768 resolution.

The xorg.conf was correct and is correct but after install of archck kernel, the resolution went down to 848 x 480 and only one option to 640 x 480.

This is a strange happening which has nil to do with the installed parameters as I see it.  The kernel download included mkinitramfs and a pair of gensplash pkges as I recall.

The xorg file includes manually added device info for my USB mouse, which doesn't scroll.

My xorg file appears in Kernel and Hardware forum under my post ANOTHER SCROLL WHEEL PROBLEM.

I still have the scroll wheel problem but now have the additional problem with the resolution changing with no option to raise it in KDE to 1024 x 768.

I post here for the new failure but the xorg is the same.

Thanks for your reply...hope it helps...

Re: Lost resolution for desktop(Solved with Vesa Driver. Not ATI)

Haven't tried the suggested archck ati driver package.

My problem includes more than archck, it changed the resolution in arch as well.  This seems to violate the separation of kernel systems.

I am in arch at this time and its resolution is 848 x 480 and I can't change to anything but 640 x 480.

The same applies to archck boot-up.

Why would an archck ati package affect my arch xorg.  I loaded no xorg into archck kernel install?

I suspect I will have to remove archck kernel, remove KDE, re-startx and re-install KDE.

I do not have a DRI video module so any special ATI driver isn't required.

It was functioning correctly before the archck download and install , lilo.conf, /sbin/lilo and boot-up in archck to wrong resolution.

Boot into arch with the same resolution problem...expected!

Re: Lost resolution for desktop(Solved with Vesa Driver. Not ATI)

As I reported, my xorg is posted in the referenced post in Kernel and Hardware Forum.

I suggested KDE removal so that I could examine the startx activity to determine if it is running correctly, since it won't start if there is a discrepancy.

Xorg is available in the post I have referenced in the other forum.

I reiterate...it was working correctly until I downloaded archck kernel .

The fact that it changed the ARCH kernel boot-up is remarkable and never expected.  This problem involves two kernels interacting with only one booted.  It should never happen....

I expect I will have to proceed in the usual manner, re-install the xorg.conf after removing KDE, startx and see if it starts without erors, modify xorg if necessary to get X to start and then reinstall KDE.  Kde is presently in the way, can't restartx alone... have to reboot!

Please refer to the xorg.conf file in the Kernel a nd Hardware forum I posted..please

Re: Lost resolution for desktop(Solved with Vesa Driver. Not ATI)

I find it hard to believe that installing the archck kernel would effect Xorg in this way.  Especially since the problem is reproducible across kernels.

What else did you install around the time of the archck kernel installation?  The output of

tail -n 20 /var/log/pacman.log

would give a good picture of this.  It's possible that you installed another package that affected Xorg, but never restarted xorg afterwards. However once you installed the kernel, you rebooted, and this 'other package' then changed your Xorg setup.

edit:

It might help to actually SPECIFY some resolutions in your screen section.

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "DualHead Monitor"
    Device "ATI Graphics Adapter 0"
    Monitor "Norcent LM730"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 24
        Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

Notice the "Modes" line in the Display SubSection?  You don't have anything like that, so Xorg has to guess what resolution you want.

Re: Lost resolution for desktop(Solved with Vesa Driver. Not ATI)

Cerebral;
Thanks for the reply...
I have added the resolution modes you mentioned but still retain incorrect KDE dsktopdisplay resolution.

I had correct display without specifying modes originally.  I now have more display resolution options in KDE display but none are greater than 800x480.

The boot-up looks quite normal at log-in prompt with the log-in window correctly sized and legible.
After entering log-in passwd, KDE display starts at wrong resolution and fonts are tiny and illegible.  I can write normally in browser (as in this post) and read posts correctly.  The scroll wheel works great in this post.

I cannot read the entries in terminal--way too small.  Mouse-over-text file gives a readable font.

I originally used Judd's xorg 7 blog details for upgrade and that worked OK.

I read that two ati-drivers are required if archck is installed.

I had only the kernel loading arch and the ...xf86-video-ati...entry whenfirst installed.  After install of archck, I have the resolution problem in both kernels.

Is the ati driver the cause of this difficulty?  If so, it was introduced by the loading of the archck kernel.

I am unable to read the file you posted due to font problems.  I could read it in arch CD chroot.

Is there a way to change KDE resolution other than right click, select configure desktop, select display and select resolution to change to another mode.  Cannot change because the "apply" button is below the screen horizon.
Perhaps I need to remove KDE from cache and re-install through pacman?

I did remove KDE but not from cache and determined that startx gave a readable display and I re-installed KDEin the X window.  It didn't fix anything although I now have about eight options of low resolution available in KDE whereas after install of archck I had only two--but can't enable any without the "apply" button.

The same problem exists in archck boot-up.

I have noted that there are several ways to obtain xorg.conf files.  Each of them seems to handle the configuration in a different manner...more confusion!
Cannot provide the xorg.conf file due to the corrupted fonts.

Hope this info helps to unravelthis problem.

Re: Lost resolution for desktop(Solved with Vesa Driver. Not ATI)

Perhaps the answer to my problem is in the Lilo configuration.

One used to apply (before udev) ....append="vga791" (or some such....)

What if the setup in lilo for archck was incorrect (no append of any kind)?

Would such an arrangement cause improper resolution in both arch and archck?

You're using 8500LE? Isn't that a very old card? If that's the case, maybe you should try running the DRI drivers, and not ati-drivers + ati-drivers-archck.

It is weird that I cannot read the icon titles in the desktop but I can read threads in the forums!! I cannot read anything I write into a terminal, the fonts are too small,,,,

I need info on how to restore arch and delete archck.

Re: Lost resolution for desktop(Solved with Vesa Driver. Not ATI)

I'm sorry, but installing kernel26archck through pacman should have _NO_ effect on kernel26.  None whatsoever -- so there's nothing to 'restore' for arch.

If you want to remove archck then it's simple to do:

pacman -R kernel26archck

As well, the append="vga..." line is for framebuffer resolution.  In theory this shouldn't effect your X resolutions at all.  My grub config for kernel26archck looks like this:

# (1) Arch Linux (Pacman-managed archck Patchset)
title Arch Linux [/boot/vmlinuz26archck]
root (hd0,5)
kernel (hd0,5)/vmlinuz26archck root=/dev/hda8 ro video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1024x768-32@70 console=tty1
initrd /initramfs-2.6.15-archck.img

So you might want to change your append="vga..." into an append "video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1024x768-32@70" or something similar to that and see if it helps at all.

Additionally, I don't see how 'corrupted fonts' prevents you from pasting your current xorg.conf.  Even if you can't read what you're writing, you should still be able to launch, say, gvim, hit "Ctrl-A" "Ctrl-C' and then paste it in here.

You can try specifying the displaysize for your monitor and see if that helps... from what I can read in your old .conf file there's already a displaysize in there, it's just commented.  Try uncommenting that line.

Also try adding "DefaultDepth 24" to your Screen section.

You know what, I'm feeling nice. smile  Try using this Xorg.conf (I took yours and played around with it a bit) - make sure xf86-video-ati is installed.

Re: Lost resolution for desktop(Solved with Vesa Driver. Not ATI)

Cerebral;

I tried removing archck with the poor definition of the display and received several lines of unreadable comments.

I just finished removing archck using chroot in archCD.

I added modes to 8,15,16 and 24.

To verify my proper xorg.conf at the time I loaded and rebooted archck, I will use a copy of yours but will have to use the archCD if I cannot read what happens when I do that.

I originally installed xorg 7 from Judd Vinet's blog on the subject and I loaded every item in his blog.

The system loaded and ran correctly after many attempts to ..startx.. concerned only with the mouse...it didn't like ../dev/mouse which is the entry given by the xorg.conf.

I finally selected an option it could accept but no scroll wheel.  I eventually found that..... /dev/input/mice....permitted ..startx...and the scroll wheel performed as well.

Until I installed archck, my system was running correctly in arch.  You may be right in suggesting that a change I made to xorg in trying to fix the mouse scroll problem may have been initiated after archck install and the subsequent reboot.

So I will attempt to install your xorg.conf details and I appreciate your giving it your attention.

One item...I do not have any "append" statements in my Lilo.conf, just the initrd=/boot/initrd26-full.img.

As "ahnold" sez. I'll be back.....

Re: Lost resolution for desktop(Solved with Vesa Driver. Not ATI)

Cerebral;

I used archCD to remove xorg.conf and replace it with your xorg.conf version and am up in the forum with scroll wheel working but the problem persists on the desktop with wrong resolution which cannot be changed because there is no access to "apply" the desired change.

Strange since the fonts in this post are normal although the window size is too large.

I note that ..."bitmap" is missing in your version.

I have an older ati agp card as you will note and I don't think it has 3d capability.

I believe this config is close to that I had when the difficulty was encountered.

It is not hard to "mistype" entries and get into "hot aqua"!!!!

The display at log-on is normal and goes crazy after "enter" when KDE is initialized.

I used the "mv" command to transfer your xorg.conf into /etc/X11 to replace the one I deleted.

I haven't a clue for the next step....

Ctrl-Alt-+ should change resolutions for you, once you're logged into KDE.  Try that?

Do I need the "bitmap" in modules list?

848x430
720x400
640x400
640x360
640x330
400x300
424x240

None of the values are those entered in xorg.conf.

Re: Lost resolution for desktop(Solved with Vesa Driver. Not ATI)

An observation during selection of Opera browser with my crippled system:

The task bar indicates the resolution changes to a lower value because the time entry is lost to the right of the screen and a wide open section occurs where the Opera icon was located, which now has moved to the right about an inch and a half.

I have tried removing KDE(and re-installing as follows);

Pacman -Scc
Pacman -Sy kde

The system has the same resolution problem.

I ran...pacman -S xorg.. the system still has the poor resolution.

Re: Lost resolution for desktop(Solved with Vesa Driver. Not ATI)

I have the same problem with my ati 9100, which is basically the same card as the 8500.  I switched to the vesa driver and the higher resolutions worked.   For me, the problem started with xorg 7.  No solution yet, but I have not been worrying about it.
