Memory Card reader not appearing in /dev [SOLVED]

I have a memory card reader on my laptop that isn't showing up in /dev, dmesg, journalctl, parted, and fdisk. I've tried running the following, but it didn't work:

# echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/rescan

I tried running a few modprobes, and I tried rebooting with a memory card inserted into the reader, but neither worked. I checked lspci, but it doesn't show up there. The card reader itself is functional when running Windows 8, I used the same card and it worked fine. Is there anything else I can try? Install a driver maybe?

EDIT
Interestingly enough, it does show up in lsusb (I think), but I still don't know what to do about it.

SOLUTION
Need to load rtsx_usb_mmc module

Re: Memory Card reader not appearing in /dev [SOLVED]

Memory card readers are often connected to the USB bus. Does lsusb show anything?

Here you go; there's a card reader controller. What happens now?

You could try manually loading rtsx_usb_sdmmc and see if it works. I don't see any other possible driver candidates for your hardware. The other possibility is that arch lacks the driver for that hardware.

Use your google-fu and see what you come up with, maybe the solution is easy but not obvious at first glance.

Re: Memory Card reader not appearing in /dev [SOLVED]

In kernels up to 3.15, the rts5139 staging driver should handle this reader. rts5139 is gone in kernel 3.16, there's rtsx_usb and rtsx_usb_sdmmc instead, they should work. Check /etc/modprobe.d, maybe you have them blacklisted there.

Re: Memory Card reader not appearing in /dev [SOLVED]

I just spent an hour trying to figure out how to get the rts5139 drivers, which were apparently phased out for the drivers you guys mentioned hehe. I probably could've saved myself an hour if I had just checked back. Thanks so much, rubenvb, for pointing me in the right direction, and thank you, emeres, Gusar, and R00KIE, for providing the solution.

@R00KIE: Definitely not obvious because the old solution is different from the new solution
@Gusar: Only have pcspkr blacklisted, maybe it's cause of the modconf hook in mkinitcpio? I could probably just add it to the MODULES section of mkinitcpio.conf and rerun it, I guess.

Again, thank you for all the help.

Re: Memory Card reader not appearing in /dev [SOLVED]

Hmm, the module doesn't load automatically? Then you'll need to set it up yourself. I don't see the need to add it to the initcpio, just create an appropriate config file in /etc/modules-load.d (check the modules-load.d manpage)

Yeah, just read about that a few moments ago on the wiki. Thanks!
