To SLI or not to SLI

I was wondering if anyone running SLI can chime in and discuss SLI on Linux and the performance gains or lack there of.

I have a spare $500 sitting around burning a hole in my pocket and I was going to pick up another GeForce 7800GTX for my machine. However, I was reading on phoronix.com that the SLI gains in performance were small. I mean, if I only get 10fps difference in Quake4 then, for me, that doesn't justify spending $500. However, if there are other noticeable gains, like desktop performance with Xcomposit or other benefits that might warrent the purchase, I might go for it.

Anyone have any experiences they care to share?

HEHE... Well, I just found out that the new 7900 that is comming out will actually be 30% faster than 2 7800s in SLI, so I think I will wait and save some more money

Thats what I'm doing It's suppoed to be released at some conference around March 10. have you seen the specs on that thing :shock:

Actually, I have not been able to find a whole log of info on it.

Nice, I ordered my new stuff this morning. A DFI Lanparty NF4-SLI mobo and dual-core Athlon64 4400+ and a new case Pickup on Saturday, build it and between now and then I need to see if I can scab a PCI video card from someone just to get it running woot
