Nice BFQ demo on an SSD

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhZl9LjCKuU

I have been following this IO scheduler for a while now, but just recently came across the above video showing some pretty amazing latency performance.  Have a peak if you haven't seen it already.

Re: Nice BFQ demo on an SSD

Impressive demonstration.
In the test using the video player, i was surprised that the scheduler makes a difference. The video player can load a part of the file in advance, which means that only the average bitrate the video player receives must be high enough for the codec in use. The average bitrate should be the same for any fair scheduler.
Also, is this video available in english?

...it is in English.  He just has an Italian accent.

Re: Nice BFQ demo on an SSD

Hmm, I can't seem to see such a drastic difference with my system (the zacate one). I tried starting chromium, dolphin and qbittorrent in quick succession, the only thing that changed was the order in which the programs launched, but the time didn't really change. Maybe it's not enough parallel load to make a difference?

Also, yes, it is in English. The accent isn't even that bad, just takes some time to get used to.

I found it to be really bad at the very beginning of the video, but if you waited like 30 seconds it wasn't bad at all
or maybe I just wasn't very attentative at the beginning of the video, I guess I'll never know

Re: Nice BFQ demo on an SSD

I did try BFQ on my install of Manjaro but noticed no radical change in things.
Then again I have a really fast seagate Barracuda HDD, I mean I did give it a fair chance even using a TWM making sure nothing was slugging things down.
Nope, speeds were universal so my 7200RPM HDD does do me justice.
Maybe next round I will try it on my old WD 5400RPM HDD
