Cannot find USB HD (/dev/sda1) BACK YET AGAIN!!!! [SOLVED]

I am trying to create a udev rule so that my external drive always mounts in the same spot, however when i use the udevinfo command i find that /dev/sda1 cannot be found.  The fdisk -l command confirms what udev has told me.  Here is the output:

[mitch@laptop ~]$ sudo fdisk -l

Disk /dev/hda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 7655 61488756 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/hda2 7656 9711 16506787+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda3 9711 9729 152283+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris

How can i get arch to find my usb HD?  Before xorg7 upgrade it was /dev/sda1, but now it is nothing!

Thanks in advance!

Re: Cannot find USB HD (/dev/sda1) BACK YET AGAIN!!!! [SOLVED]

you probably don't have the right modules loaded.
have a look at lsmod output to see what modules you have running.

Re: Cannot find USB HD (/dev/sda1) BACK YET AGAIN!!!! [SOLVED]

I rebooted my machine several times, and one of the times i rebooted it it picked up the drive so i was able to create a udev rule for it. Hopefully this will not happen again! smile

Re: Cannot find USB HD (/dev/sda1) BACK YET AGAIN!!!! [SOLVED]

Ok, so i thought i had it working, but i apparently dont.  I am now trying to use autofs.  i followed the wiki, but it still doesnt want to work.  i noticed something in dmesg, but i dont really know what it means. The error reads:

usb 3-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 15
usb 3-3: device not accepting address 15, error -110

here is my dmesg output:

Also, should i be booting with the -noapic option in grub in order to get rid of the APIC errors?  Do i really need APIC?

With autofs, i have noticed that my devices no longer show up as mounted/unmounted, how can i have them automounted and at the sam time show up in konqueror?  Also, how do i unmount disks while using autofs?

Sorry for all the questions, and thanks for all the help!

Re: Cannot find USB HD (/dev/sda1) BACK YET AGAIN!!!! [SOLVED]

I have noticed a new error when i have the drive listed in my fstab:

/dev/sda1 is mounted. e2fsck: cannot continue. aborting

I am no longer getting the dmesg errors reguarding apic and the external HD since i added noapic to the grub boot line.  Can someone tell me what i have to do to be able to get my ext3 external drive to boot up with its entry in fstab?  When i comment the line out, i dont get the error.  Here is the fstab entries i have tried:

#################### External Hard Drives ##########################
#/dev/sda1 /mnt/external ext3 user,defaults 0 1
#/dev/sda1 /mnt/external ext3 defaults,user,noauto 0 2

Re: Cannot find USB HD (/dev/sda1) BACK YET AGAIN!!!! [SOLVED]

Here my fstab entry for my USB HD:

/dev/sda1 /mnt/hd_ext ext3 noauto,user,rw,suid,dev,exec,async 1 0

I don't boot with it. I mount it, put my backup on it and unmount it. Tonight, I'll compare my lsmod with yours.  Let me know if you need more info.

Re: Cannot find USB HD (/dev/sda1) BACK YET AGAIN!!!! [SOLVED]

Thanks for the fstab entry Snowman!!! For whatever difference there was in the the two entries was giving me the error at boot.  I am now able to boot up no problem with the USB HD in the fstab!!

THANK YOU!

Re: Cannot find USB HD (/dev/sda1) BACK YET AGAIN!!!! [SOLVED]

Glab it works.

Probably there was a conflict between the defaults and user options because defaults implies nouser.
