Re: xgl - success stories?

I know that there are PKGBUILDs out there, but i wanted to know:

Is there a package for XGL or is it at this point PKGBUILDs only?

Also, if there isn't a package, how long will it be until i can download an XGL package?

Can you use XGL with KDM or do you have to start X manually?

Yeah, good point. I assumed they were just 'extras', not necessary for things to work. And since anti-aliasing was making the windows flash i turned them off. I didnt test any GL apps with them on. Ill try it next time. Thanks for pointing that out.

Re: xgl - success stories?

Check gentoo wiki, tons of info in there. You can set it up to start with kdm or gdm or make your won script to start it manualy. For gdm/kdm it only starts Xgl u need to do changes to xfce4-session or gnome-session if u want compiz to run too.

Any other desktops working with this? I presume e17 can't work with this. I hear kde dosen't work(or dose it?). Anything else?

Re: xgl - success stories?

OK, I was able to run it from Shadowhand repo.

My system:
- Athlon XP 1800+
- 768MB RAM
- Radeon 9100 with DRI drivers (no fglrx!)
- latest kernel from Arch

Results:
- cube effect is quite fast, but sometimes I see flickering
- transparency is awesome and works with mouse scroll
- window "wobbling" is nice, but slow
- scrolling in firefox is very slow (why?!)
- movie playing is slow (tried mplayer and xine)
- OpenGL applications works without acceleration, or they are very slow

i was successful in finally reading the supported graphics cards in the gentoo wiki section to realize that i wasted hours trying to get an unsupported card working (8500LE) :'(

Re: xgl - success stories?

It ran nicely with Gnome. I have a P4 3.2ghz 512mb GF FX5200.

Do *not* use the exports directed at nvidia cards (made it all sluggish here). Problems I had - Couldn't play any vids, couldn't run ZSNES or MAME.

Re: xgl - success stories?

I got it running by downloading and compiling the latest cvs versions, as per the instructions on the forum. I'm running it with xorg 7, KDE, and an ati radeon 9600 pro. It's very snappy and looks good.

Re: xgl - success stories?

Do you think all this info will be added to an XGL wiki? I have tried xgl, but it doesnt work right.  I want to get it working with KDE, but i really dont know what i have to do to get it to work.

Re: xgl - success stories?

I got my xgl working well... I understsand it uses Mesa for software rendering (as the video card drivers don't support something or other).. so I dont attempt to play quake4.. however if I just drop in to standard x I can play my opengl games just fine smile I am wondering if there is a work around to this? Re: xgl - success stories?

I installed XGL via shadowhand's repo. It works solid for about 10min. and then locks up.

Here are my specs:
-AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0GHz
-1.5GB RAM
-128MB ATI Mobility Radeon X200m

Working:
Cube, Zoom, Alt +Tab, F12, wobbly windows, Mplayer and Xine play video fine.

Not-Working:
XFCE + XGL - I type startxgl-xfce and then it goes to a light blue screen, and then it freezes.

I am an ATI owner so i edited a line in /usr/bin/startxgl to state this:

msg "Starting XGL at display :$xgldisplay"
# ATI users must use "xv:pbuffer"!!!
Xgl :$xgldisplay -ac -accel xv -accel xv:pbuffer&

Can someone tell me:
1. what i have to do to use XGL in KDE
2. How i can get XGL to stop freezing while im using it
3. Where the config file for XGL is so that i can add an image to the top of the cube

Thanks for any help!

Also, thanks to shadowhand for a brutal repo!! lol

Re: xgl - success stories?

got it running on my msi s260 laptop. intel gma900 vga.

everything works smoothly.. except minimizing big windowses, hacks a little there.. and also scrolling firefox.

but I really feel the difference between the cvs of 2 weeks ago. it flimmered when switching desktops or using the f12 function.

now with the latest mikos cvs package, everything works fine on my intel vga.

Re: xgl - success stories?

Works great here, thanks for putting this in your repo Shadowhand. much appreciated.

I like a fat 22 pixel or so titlebar on my windows, and would like to change the close min max buttons, anyone here messed with that yet?

I changed the startxgl to this, which i believe is the right setting for ATI cards:

Xgl :$xgldisplay -ac -accel xv:pbuffer -accel glx:pbuffer &

I can safely say that you are a man who knows good music! smile

Re: xgl - success stories?

mtrivis i am having the same problem as you. i have tried shadowhands packages and never once have they been stable for me. i just tried the kororaa live cd which has xgl working beautifully on my testbox (p3, nvidia vidcard). i also tried shadowhand's packages on this testbox and they work as well. yet, on my laptop (specs in sig) i have not yet been able to achieve a stable xgl system, though it looks beautiful while it works  8)

so i guess its a partial success story

Re: xgl - success stories?

i installed from shadowhands repo.

sudo pacman -Sy gnome xgl-cvs mesa-cvs compiz-cvs
startxgl

and it worked beautifully.
unfortunately after logging out and installing gnome-extra group it doesn't start anymore. gnome splash screen comes and the little icons in it stop at window manger. that's it. can't get it to work again.  I don't see why this would happen, what does installing gnome-extra have to do with that. i also tried removing packages or all packages and reinstalling with clearing cache before, but nothing works, same thing gnome doesn't start.
can anybody help?

I'm also having problems with system lockups while using Xgl, so it's not just you. I'm using the latest fglrx driver from pacman.

Re: xgl - success stories?

I got mine working using Mikos package from the long xgl thread.

my specs are:
2 x AMD Athlon MP 1800+
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
768MB Ram
Gnome

The only problems I'm seeing are that UT2003 won't run, my window switcher applet in Gnome is very tiny and only allows me to choose 1 usable workspace (though there are always 4 working), window scrolling is slow (relative to how it is in normal xserver), I can't successfully exit Gnome (have to use CTRL+ALT+BKSPC), my keyboard shortcuts for "Take Snapshot..." and to use the Gnome menu don't work, and "fglrxinfo" doesn't work but "fglrxinfo -display :1" does, and i think that's it for now

EDIT: i just switched to using shadowhand's repo and i have the same results
