xvidcap (ffmpeg?) problem

Sitting here trying to capture some vids on my Xgl desktop, and i just can't get xvidcap to capture anything, it just fails with the error:

[mpeg1video @ 0xb7e87cb0]only YUV420 is supported
could not open codec

I get exactly the same error trying this on a regular Xorg (7.0) session.
Packages installed are:
ffmpeg 20050806-1
xvidcap 1.1.3-2 (from testing)

This is the command I'm trying to run

xvidcap --file "xglcap.avi" --cap_geometry 1280x1024+0+0 --gui no -v -time 30.0 --audio no

Thanks in advance!

Re: xvidcap (ffmpeg?) problem

Well, good to hear i'm not alone... maybe the package isn't yet totally compatible with Xorg7 . Where do i send a bug report in that case?

Re: xvidcap (ffmpeg?) problem

Little bump here... aneas: did you try with regular xorg yet? I still can't get it to work neither under xorg7 or xgl. Anybody else that has this problem?

Re: xvidcap (ffmpeg?) problem

I have exactly same problem here :-( Xvidcap doesn't work in Xgl or even in regular X. This package is really broken, but I don't know if it is related to ffmpeg version or X.Org 7.0.

Re: xvidcap (ffmpeg?) problem

ok, I'm glad to hear I'm not alone.. maybe we should file a bug report? or try to confirm that the problem is for example that the ffmpeg package isn't adopted to xorg7. I'm too keen on capping some flashy xgl vids ;p

Re: xvidcap (ffmpeg?) problem

I have filled bug report here:
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/4075

According to CVS entries, xvidcap PKGBUILD was updated to X.Org 7.0 about 3 weeks ago. So this is strange...

Re: xvidcap (ffmpeg?) problem

In the mean time we can try Istanbul. Maybe it is even better than xvidcap (and it is recording to Ogg Theora format, hurray! ;-)).

Re: xvidcap (ffmpeg?) problem

Thanks for filing the bug report.
I actually already tried Istanbul, and it crashed when trying to stop the record (using Xgl and XFCE-svn). Thanks for the suggestion though, and it would be interesting to hear if you get it working.

Re: xvidcap (ffmpeg?) problem

Istanbul works for me, but it is slow and final video is buggy and ugly. There is really some problem with it... well, I hope that xvidcap will be better.

Re: xvidcap (ffmpeg?) problem

I just submitted a patch to the bugtracker that will fix the issues with xvidcap. Look for a new release soon!

Thanks for submitting the patch. After I've applied it here, xvidcap doesn't give the same error as before, instead it starts to cap as it should but slows down or "lags" the entire UI drastically, the cpu usage goes up to 100% and the resulting video only contains one frame every second or so. I've tried several different options and codecs.
