I am trying to record audio using my laptop's microphone, but I am also using this laptop for running a projector display, so I can't take up much screen space with a meter.
What I am looking for is a way to have an applet in the system tray or status bar that would show the volume of the source. Numbers would be nice, but a simple low, medium, high, peaking would be good enough. If there is a command line tool that would show the information, that would be fine, since I can get it to the status bar from there.
Does anyone have an idea on where to start? It could be that I am looking in all of the wrong places.
