Can't access the backlight controller

So I've been trying to adjust backlight brightness on my new Lenovo Z50 but there is nothing in the /sys/class/backlight folder and xbacklight returns "No outputs have backlight property"

I have no idea where to even start with this as the documentation is rather sparse here.  Any thoughts?

Setting kernel parameter 'drm.debug=14' and then looking at dmesg after boot might provide some clues.

I don't really see anything out of the ordinary here.  I also recently had a problem where if I let the laptop go to sleep it would disable the monitor entirely (no power, no backlight) and refuse to turn it on, even after power cycling until I held down the BIOS keys while restarting...I have no idea what could be causing all of this...

Thanks, though I have been reading the wiki page.  What I mean is that I can't find much on how the system actually registers the backlight controls it.
Do you mind going into a little detail as to what was wrong with yours?  The kernel parameters I saw dealt mostly with acpi registering multiple backlights (I am running an "optimus" system but with the nvidia card disabled for the time being).  Currently, it would be awesome if I could get any to register...

I was always able to control the backlight level in Arch (since 3.12.6) with an Intel HD4600 until 3.16.
Then the backlight control stopped working.
I use the first kernel parameter described & it works fine now.

What is the output of "lspci -vnn|grep -C 1 VGA" and "lsmod"? I don't see any graphics driver being loaded other than efifb.

Are you in X11 or at the console?
What is the output of "sudo lspci -vnn|grep -iA11 VGA"?
What is the output of "zcat /proc/config.gz |grep -i -e 915 -e drm"?

Do you have a laptop with Haswell CPU and integrated graphics? If so, I think you should be using the i915 video driver. What is the output of dmesg after a "sudo modprobe i915"?

"sudo modprobe i915" seems to be having some issues:

It appears that the module is not loaded and I noticed in dmesg that I'm getting these errors on startup, though I don't know what to make of them

I wonder why i915 isn't loading? Have you installed the main intel graphics driver? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_graphics This is needed for i915 to work with X11. Also, you might add "modprobe.blacklist=efifb" to the kernel command line (in the boot loader). If that doesn't work, will you post the new dmesg output?
