ATI fglrx LOW framerate, fglrxconfig missing?

I'm confused, and slightly out of my depth here I think. I've read lots of forum posts and searched and searched, but I'm failing to understand half of what I read.

I'd tried the ATI fglrx drivers with success before (I have a radeon 9600SE card), but since upgrading to kernel 2.6.15 I had the same problem as others with hanging on shutting down X. So I went back to the radeon driver for a while. I just installed ati-drivers from community now that there is a new version of the ATI driver, and that fixes the shutdown problem (using the archck kernel which is installed with ati-drivers as a dependency*). However I get like 200fps if i maximise glxgears, and pinball (for instance) gets about 10fps.

*I've no idea what the archck kernel does or if I need it, I only installed it because the ati-drivers package depends on it. I did try using the ATI binary installer (the new version) on the standard arch kernel and had the hanging issue again.

Another thing that could be related, is I had to use an old xorg.conf (generated using fgrlxconfig back when all was fine) to use the fglrx features, because fglrxconfig doesnt appear to exist on my system now!

To add insult to injury, the TV output generates an appaling picture on my TV compared to when I use it in windows. This has always been the case on linux though. Nothing I configure seems to improve this.

Heres the last xorg.conf I used:

Re: ATI fglrx LOW framerate, fglrxconfig missing?

Can you read this post please:

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=18334

It seems as though your direct rendering by hardware is not working. You should be getting more like a 1000 frames/sec.

I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts...

Re: ATI fglrx LOW framerate, fglrxconfig missing?

Solved big_smile I used the package in AUR ati-drivers-arch and direct rendering was turned on, now get ~400fps in glxgears maximised to 1280x1024, ~275fps in pinball.

Re: ATI fglrx LOW framerate, fglrxconfig missing?

I've gone back to the radeon driver (not fglrx) for now. I dont need the 3d and tv output that much. It only happens on fglrx.

Re: ATI fglrx LOW framerate, fglrxconfig missing?

update, it now works with the xorg7 update and the (new?) ati-drivers package. At 1600x1200 too! I used to think such resolutions were silly, back when I used windows and there wasnt the fine tuning of monitor DPI available that there is in Linux. (I think later versions of windows did something about this, but still, this is the first time I've been able to use 1600x1200 and still read without a magnifying glass tongue)

I'm currently searching for the solution to a prob though - it does work, but direct rendering only works for root sad I stumbled across my own post during the search, will post back in a minute if I dont find the answer...

Re: ATI fglrx LOW framerate, fglrxconfig missing?

Jefg - do you have a "DRI" section in your xorg.conf?

Re: ATI fglrx LOW framerate, fglrxconfig missing?

no apparently not! I do have

Section "Module"
        Load  "record"
        Load  "dri"
        Load  "xtrap"
        Load  "dbe"
        Load  "glx"
        Load  "extmod"
        Load  "type1"
        Load  "freetype"
EndSection

though.

Re: ATI fglrx LOW framerate, fglrxconfig missing?

jefg- nevermind, I'm not thinking clearly -- is your xorg.conf the same as when you posted it in the first part of this thread?  You've got the dri section in that one...
what do you get when you issue

LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo

Re: ATI fglrx LOW framerate, fglrxconfig missing?

no I had all kinds of trouble with the old xorg.conf, so I renamed it and started anew with xorg -configure and then aticonfig.

"LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo" gives me

Re: ATI fglrx LOW framerate, fglrxconfig missing?

Ah, that's your problem then.

Section "DRI"
    Mode 0666
EndSection

That'll fix you up -- add that to xorg.conf and restart X

Re: ATI fglrx LOW framerate, fglrxconfig missing?

thanks that worked, but only after a reboot oddly enough! Still, I knew an update would come that would get around my earlier problem. Arch rocks big_smile

Re: ATI fglrx LOW framerate, fglrxconfig missing?

I get ~1000fps but a few lines in glxinfo concerns me. I've made the symlink from /usr/X11R6/lib/modules to /usr/lib/xorg/modules. I also have the DRI section in my xorg.conf

LIBGL_DEBUG="verbose" glxinfo
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri//atiogl_a_dri.so
fglrx: libGL version does not match - OpenGL module is using glapi fallback
