I have installed Skype but it can not find my built in camera (when I go to select the video device it doesn't find anything). My system is a Dell Studio 1458.

Linux 3.16.3-1-ARCHI have searched and can not find anything useful. I can't even seem to locate my camera. The Arch Webcam Setup has some information but I can't even find my device listed. This webcam has worked in the past (on other operating systems) but I have never tried to get it to work on Arch until now.

video 19476 0 I opened up Cheese (the photo-booth application) and Empathy (the IM service) to see if my camera is recognized but neither application had it listed.
Any more ideas? I'm starting to think it might be hardware related. I've opened up the laptop several times in the past (these Studio 1458s have terrible heating issues) to blow out dust. I don't see how but is it possible that the physical "webcam connection" is to blame? I've always been careful (using ESD bracelets with proper grounds) and patient making sure I reconnect everything. It also seems unlikely due to the fact that my computer works in every other facility. Regardless, I wanted to provide as much info as possible.
I suppose a last ditch option is to purchase a usb webcam. I would rather use my integrated webcam (if at all possible, assuming it works) but I do need to have something.

Could be a hardware issue. Maybe it wasn't connected very well from the start - I was dealing with a netbook with a (factory-) faulty LCD cable, disassembling the screen and poking the cable was helping for some time.

Interesting. Opening the laptop would have to wait until this weekend though. I need it for work/school and can't afford to be without it during the week.

Just as a data point I just did an install on a Toshiba laptop with a webcam which appeared not to have the webcam show up with either 'lspci' or 'lsusb'. It took running with 'lsusb -v | grep -i cam' to see that there was indeed a webcam there in the verbose output. Cheese found it right away with no extra drivers.
In your case make sure to read the output with the verbose switch. It just might be there after all.
