Can not get Kdenlive to open video clips (Avformat module missing)

I have some hobby video editing I'd like to do, but I can not for the life of me get my favorite editing program Kdenlive to run properly. It starts, but any time I try to add a clip to a project I get an "Clip is invalid, will be removed from project" error.

I had it working nicely a couple of years ago, but since then the ffmpeg package was branched to libav and from what I have been able to search this is where my troubles stem from. According to the Kdenlive documentation, it should be compatible with libav, but there is still something not right. Alas I need the libav package for other programs, so can not roll back to ffmpeg (they are incompatible).

This is the errors I get when starting Kdenlive:

No LADSPA plugins were found!

Check your LADSPA_PATH environment variable.
mlt_repository_init: failed to dlopen /usr/lib/mlt/libmltavformat.so
(libavformat.so.56: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)

The LADSPA plugin is of no consequence here.
I do indeed miss libavformat.so.56 (I have libavformat.so, libavformat.so.55 and libavformat.so.55.12.0), but I have no idea on how to get it short of rolling back to ffmpeg.
Libav does include libavformat, but seems like Kdenlive is looking for the wrong one?

When I run the in-app Config Wizard, I get an "Avformat module (FFmpeg)" missing error and the "Available Codecs (avformat)" tab is greyed out. However the system check says that "FFmpeg & ffplay" are present and ok.

System:

linux 3.16.3-1
kdenlive 0.9.8-2 (installed from community repo)
libav-10 3-1 (tried libav 11 first, same problem. Installed from Aur/multimedia repo)
mlt 0.9.2-2 (installed from community repo)
