Broken external HD

Hi all,

I dropped my external HD and it is not being detected anymore, here is the dmesg log:

[ 7840.123152] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdc] Assuming drive cache: write through

It times out trying to spin the disk, but I can hear the disk spinning.

And those are the messages after I unplug it:

[ 7906.035397] usb 1-7: USB disconnect, device number 7
[ 7906.036304] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdc] READ CAPACITY failed

[ 7906.036358] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdc] Attached SCSI disk

I can think in a couple possibilities:

1 - the motor is broken or stuck
2-  PCB is broken

Is there a way to be certain of that? If it is only the PCB I could buy another one, if it is the motor I could try to unstuck it, but since there is a high probability of damaging the plates I want to be certain of that first.

Re: Broken external HD

The "Ultimate Boot CD" has a number of hard drive utilities for the various HD manufacturer's that might help you diagnoze the fault. If it is possible to take apart the casing you might also find just a dislodged connector (if you're lucky).
