Tried. Seems to work. Note: when viewing certain gifs and flashs (testing with the site of the previous crash) both cores go to 96% ... @3100 MHz...

I had run nvidia-304xx on GeForce 6100 and it seemed to still lock up, but the GeForce 6150SE seems to not have any problem. What nvidia-xxxx did you install and what does top show?
I may have to CONSOLE you about your usage of ridiculously easy graphical interfaces...

If nvidia-304xx is correct for your hardware, then ok...
Might put codetags around the top output, and you'll actually have to watch top for awhile to see what is holding the processor(s). Looking for a process that seems to be a runaway. Won't necessarily be one output. But it does look like Xorg.bin and a couple others are running it a little (remembering that you had dual core).

Last night another slow motion crash:
Apps running: xterm, Firefox (one tab, facebook). While scrolling firefox begins to stutter... then it freezes, video stops updating, mouse still moves for a while (aprox 30 segs) then whole system dies. Couldn´t check top. Last conky reading before freezing showed both cores at 45%.
This is getting extremely annoying...
Offline
Could you just lspci | grep VGA for us to make sure you have the right driver? It appears that the 7000 should be the nvidia-304xx.

You're probably having the same problem I was with the 6100 nouveau nor nvidia-304xx would do anything but freeze. I must say the mileage was better on nvidia-304xx but not much. You couldn't even ssh in, because it was completely dead. I haven't tried the browsers extensively on the 6150SE, but it hasn't given me any trouble on high FPS applications like stellarium or openttd. I tried those on the quirky nvidia and it locked up. So it must be some nvidias work better than others.

So to speak, we´re pretty much f**ked up? I´m not buying a new video card just because... Sigh... I tried TWO different nvidias (7200 and 7300 IIRC).
Offline
It looks like I'd think the 6100 and 6150SE would be in the same class: they aren't. The 6135SE is in NV4C and the NV4E. The 7200 and 7300 in your case is in the same class NV46. These all seem to be in the same family.

Been using for 2.5 hours and no crashes, using Chromium. Nevertheless, both cores go to 65% playing a video in youtube (html5) (and chromium is the main culprit according to Top)... it seems a little too much, by the way.

There is a big chance it is hardware related. I had weirdness like this in the past on an older system. I t appeared for a time that switching from Nvidia->Nouveau solved it but then a day or two later it crashed on Nouveau as well. The GPU had bad capacitors and this was the culprit. Switching drivers merely avoided the problem for a little bit by coincidence.
I think you said you tried two different GPUs? If so do you have a spare power supply to test with? A bad PSU can cause this type of weirdness as well.
Offline
I thought so for a while. The PSU is a new one, bought specially for this, replacing the previuos (working) one. This is the 2nd GeForce 7x00 I tried here. I´m thinking in buying an used 8400GS and keep trying... (and get VDPAU by the way). Nevertheless I´ll visually check the capacitors just to be sure.
Forgot to mention that LinuxMint on the same PC works normally and without troubles...
Note: installing profile-sync-daemon helped a lot to avoid filesystem corruption whith the crashes...

Two minutes after the last edition of my previous post the system crashed and freezed thoroughly. Apps running: xterm with pacman "syu"ing, chromium with arch open and the login page of facebook (but not login yet) and nothing more (well, windowmaker, compton, conky and not much more). After hard resetting I can't login any more. MDM (or X) does not start and console login fails, when I put my user/pass it returns to the login console inmediately. So, I'm posting this form within LinuxMint... and I'm certainly pissed off a lot. A whole lot. Hmmm, GPU temperature shows 56ºC...

And Mint crashed too.... and XP.... So, now, it's utterly a hardware problem. Sh*t!!!
Offline
Even with nvidia-304xx installed with the 6100, it did just what you're saying. Rebooting immediately without pause in between just craters more quickly. XP I think still works however. It wasn't just me then. The 6150SE is running just fine however.

Well, finally I solved this by brute force alone (always a good last resort).
As I luckily had two partitions for Arch ( root and home) I proceeded to format root partition and reinstall the base system and go up from there. And to try something new, I changed the root partition filesystem from ext4 to btrfs with compression enabled (so far, so good)
Up to now, everything works (using nouveau as driver), Facebook, YouTube, etc, on Opera and Firefox.
It's certainly not an elegant solution, but it works, and it only took a couple of hours. Now I'm back on Arch and it usual speed and quick responses.
Maybe I'll change home partition filesystem to btrfs when sure everything is ok.
Cheers!
Considering the performance of brtfs, you traded up
.
A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.

Hardware problem: apparently, a bad seated ram stick. It caused a corruption with bash (the crash ocurred when running "pacman Syu") that made me do quite a fight to get it running again (talking of Arch). The other OSes recovered without further ado.

Yeah, I did a memtest86+ on the troubling box but it didn't find anything. Was it crashing the same on the other OS?

Yes, last time ALL OSes crash seconds after login. Arch, Mint and XP. After the adjusting of the ram stick Mint run without troubles (thanx God, because I repaired Arch from within Mint). And Arch (after repairing the bash corruption) run for at least 2.5 hours without problems. XP didn´t test yet. Let´s hope there are no more problems tonite.
