I too have problems with the nvidia-340xx driver and my 310M in my laptop. After having read the different posts in the forums about that driver, I have managed to get X to work, but that wasn't the end of it.
For one, the screen detection is all wrong, insisting that that laptop's flat panel is connected, but also prensent on the external vga and the HDMI out, leaving me with three identical screens, only one of which exists. I do use a screen on my vga output, but it has a much lower resolution that the laptop's screen and refuses to work. Further, I use lxdm as a login manager, but that isn't possible as things stand. So I have to start xfce from the console. Within xfce, things are almost normal, save for the virtual desktop applet which doubles itselfs (giving the appearance of 8 virtual desktops instead of my customary 4).
What really worries me, beyond a somewhat disfunctional X, is the uneven flickering of the backlight, which can't be a good sign, nor good for the hardware.
I have finally switched to nouveau, and have at least gained a laptop I can work with. What games I had from Steam that worked on the laptop are now inoperable, but that is not a major issue.
My question is, does anyone know what is going on exactly, and is this going to be resolved by just waiting for updates?
