I tried again newer versions of the nvidia driver but I am still failing:
nvidia-331.79 (own PKGBUILD based on arch PKGBUILD) and current 337.25-4 (from the extra repo)
With these versions, my system immediately gets running mad after the X-Server starts. Besides from some Programmes failing to start the screen begins to flicker and than everything turns black.
Switching as soon as possible into a virtual console and stopping the X-Server and downgrading to the nvidia-304xx from arch repo gives me back a stable system. So is there any reason why my hardware doesn't work with newer version of nvidia-driver?

GeForce 8200 is on the legacy list, it's meant to be used with the 340.xx driver, so it indeed should work, according to the nvidia websites.

Well I find the listings on nvidia a bit confusing:
This page indicated that my card isn't even supported by 304xx (anymore?).
If I do a search with the help of this page I get
a) the highest recommended version is 319, but current version of 304 (=304.121) in arch is suggested if I choose "GeForce 8200 /nForce 730a" under Product
b) the versions recommended are 331 and 340 as well if I only choose GeForce 8200" under Product
Since 331 and as just described upward versions leads me into serious trouble believing in first place my hardware to be broken or incompatible with a kernel update I wonder why there is no hint that Geforce 8200 isn't definitely not working with hardware I have (built in graphic chip on mainboard).
It costs me hours (and due to my additional fault a cpu when checking its function by putting in another in desperation ...) to find these false friends of driver versions still hoping that it may be something else.

Can you just keep using nvidia-304xx?
Offline
Yes, of course.
Still wonder, if I miss something. xine started to fail and cmplayer and vlc (stable or git) are failing with proper vdpau playback with me. Since at least xine worked like charm in the beginning, I thought maybe it is time to try a driver update again. And until arch changes to kernel 3.12, I didn't use the legacy branch too.
I guess I will have to rest with xv video output.

After googling again and again I finally found that I am not mad and not alone:
Link to topic of Nvida Forums
There is a work around suggested which point back to the forum here. It works as well in my case running now 340.32.
So as it was announced here or in the news of today (2014-10-05) 340.xx still supports may Geforce 8200, but strange enough, not out of the box with extreme consequences if you don't know about this kernel module option talked about in the link above.

I use the nvidia-304xx driver with my 8400GS without issue. Is there a reason why you want another series of drivers?
Offline
I use nvidia 8400GS rev.2, just like graysky and my dirver is nvidia 343.22-1.
I have no issues whatsoever... so, somehow it seems there is inaccurate info. out there.
By what bernd_b has found my system should NOT be working with my current drivers ... but it is. ![]()
I'm running Arch 64 and that seems to be what bernd_b is also using, so I'm guessing there is something else to this problem than just the nvidia drivers. Unless, of course, the revision (mine at rev.2) makes an important difference.

Dunno what to tell you. I have the same video hardware, but the nvidia package (v343.22) will not work.
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G98 [GeForce 8400 GS Rev. 2] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])And dmesg with nvidia package:
NVRM: The NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS GPU installed in this system is
NVRM: supported through the NVIDIA 340.xx Legacy drivers. Please
NVRM: visit http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html for more
NVRM: information. The 343.22 NVIDIA driver will ignore
NVRM: this GPU. Continuing probe...
No NVIDIA graphics adapter found!
NVRM: NVIDIA init module failed! However, the 304xx package works fine.

@graysky
Well ... it seems we have the exact same card in all regards.
If the version makes no difference I have absolutely not idea what the problem may be.
Technically speaking, there should be a reason for the very same hardware to work in my case and not it yours and bernd_b. But I'll be dammed if I can think of one reason that explains it! ![]()

As of today's update of the nvidia drivers I'm in the same situation you both are.
I had to downgrade to the nvidia-304xx in order to have my system to work.
I've noticed however that I lost the transparency feature. Is that your case too?
R.
Update: I'm a moron!! I somehow ended up logging into KDE in safe mode, therefore I had no transparency enabled.
All is well with nvidia-304xx. My bad. ![]()

Looks like some hardware has moved from 304 to 340 designations.
I may have to CONSOLE you about your usage of ridiculously easy graphical interfaces...
Look ma, no mouse.

Yes. I'm aware of it. The update notes made that point.
Sadly the 340xx series did not work in my system ... and for what I'm reading in the forums I'm not alone on this one.
I'm not sure where this will go but I have a feeling it will take a little time for things to settle. ![]()

There are a couple of other threads that are saying the same thing.

well, some days ago, after updaing system. X did stop working. Reason was that last nvidia driver is not supporting my 8400GS.
so I did install 340xx version of driver, but next days was update of kernel and X did stop working again.
so I did switch to xf86-video-nouveau, now it is wokring ....

@jancici,
It seems that the 8400GS series does not work, as suggested, with the 340xx driver version. I, and some others, have had the same problem.
What works is the 304xx driver, and that's what I'm using, as well as some of the people in this thread.

Glad it all worked out for you.
You may want to edit your original post and append [solved] so others looking for solutions to similar problems may your this thread as a reference.

I experienced the same thing. My card had support dropped and had to move to 340xx, which didn't work for me.
I bought my nvidia card only because it was better than vanilla and was cheap. No gaming.
I'm using nouveau now, which works plenty good enough for me. And I like the integrated framebuffer for the console.
Maybe other readers will consider moving to nouveau.
Cheers

I have that card (the g or mobile) and I remember a while back with the NVIDIA upgrade it got all messed up with the NVIDIA driver I had never thought to downgrade thought they would just rename the driver. I was at odds at the time I even went to the official nvidia site and there process pointed me to the equivalent of the NVIDIA driver in repos so I thought it was a bug that would get sorted in time. Any way the official driver did not work either which is wierd for I picked my model and everything any way I did downgrade the driver and it worked fine and as good as the other driver for that model.
