I recently installed Arch and i have the aforementioned issue. If i log in as a regular user using "startx" the screen goes black and then brings back the console output. If i am logged as root although, everything is fine. What could be the root of this? Thanks
ps for an inexplicable reason KDM can't work even though its enabled...

What output do you get in the console when you try to use startx? What is in your xorg log? What is in your ~/.xinitrc?

When upgrading to the latest Xorg, I had this message, maybe there is a problem in this new scheme; try restoring "the old behavior" as suggested.
xorg-server has now the ability to run without root rights with
the help of systemd-logind. xserver will fail to run if not launched
from the same virtual terminal as was used to log in.
Without root rights, log files will be in ~/.local/share/xorg/ directory.
Old behavior can be restored through Xorg.wrap config file.
See Xorg.wrap man page (man xorg.wrap).

You probably messed up your permissions in your HOME directory by running things as root. I know ~/.Xauthority specificly can be a problem. Make sure you don't have files in your HOME owned by root. If that's not it your Xorg.0.log should tell you the problem.
