Epson Scanner hangs, used to work

I'm using an "Epson Perfection v330 Photo" scanner, which used to work, at least several months ago. Haven't scanned in a while, and now it actually freezes on issuing a

$ scanimage

after it made some initial noise.
I read in the wiki about xhci stuff, I got the "powerlevel is deprecated use powercontrol" msg in dmesg, so I turned off a similar-sounding option in the bios as was recommended in the wiki (didn't have an option that sounded exactly the same, but this should be it), but it didn't help.
So I just plugged it into an USB2 port instead of USB3, no more warning in dmesg, all seemed good, but again it just freezes up at scanimage!
It does show up in

$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 04b8:0142 Seiko Epson Corp. GT-F730 [GT-S630/Perfection V33/V330 Photo]

After the scanner freezes I have to unplug its power to restore it to get it to make some noise on the next futile command I issue, if I don't power cycle it it will just stay silent forever.
Kernel downgrade is out of the question unfortunately (I haven't tried it).

Re: Epson Scanner hangs, used to work

I got the scanner to work, but it only works like this:

xsane

then a box "scanning for devices" pops up and I have to wait for quite a long while. Then a box pops up giving me two choices:

-Epson (unknown model) flatbed scanner [epkowa:usb:001:007]
-Epson Perfection V330 flatbed scanner [epkowa:interpreter:001:007]

I pick the second one and am able to actually scan!

`scanimage -L` lists (after hanging for a long while) the same two choices as in that xsane box. However, why does plain scanimage not work?
It just hangs forever, I have to CTRL+C it.
And this fails too:

$ sane-find-scanner
could not open USB device 0x1d6b/0x0002 at 002:001: Access denied (insufficient permissions)
could not open USB device 0x8087/0x07da at 001:004: Access denied (insufficient permissions)

could not open USB device 0x1d6b/0x0002 at 003:001: Access denied (insufficient permissions)

What do those "pipe errors" mean?

Actually I'm fine with scanimage not working and just using xsane instead. But what's really annoying is this super long freezing up time until xsane is ready to scan.
