Are you on kernel 3.17 ? if so then did you also tried the other model I mentioned in the wiki ?
If you're on 3.16 then try alc283-chrome .

Edit: I on 3.17 (linux upstream, no chromebook package) and Gnome 3.14 and without adding the model alc283-dac-wcaps the mic isn't usable at all, when adding the model I don't have the volume limitation that you described.

I do apologize for the extremely late reply, however I am on 3.17.0-1-mainline-chromebook and unfortunately neither alc283-dac-wcaps nor alc283-chrome worked for me.

I do get the same issue with the microphone dying when raising the volume beyond the level shown on the picture.

Let me know if you can think of anything.

I would love to get this sorted .. Tomorrow I will try log in into a minimalistic window manager such as fluxbox or twm, will launch Skype and will see if it makes any difference at all.

Thanks

Re: Acer C720/C720P Chromebook

The bug related to the GPU hangs (and maybe system freezes) marked as duplicate of another, and it looks like Intel developers actually trying to solve the other bug.
Maybe finally after about 4 months with my C720 it would actually work without issues.

I didn't had a good wifi setup environment for testing but now I do, I see some wifi connection dropouts every few minutes, time to investigate.
What are your wifi related settings ?
I only got ath9k kernel module options in "/etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf"

I've been using 3.17 since it first hit the mainline branch and I have not experienced these wi-fi issues, so it seems unlikely.

The other day I did experience some random continuous disconnects, but I think it was more related to the network I was on, since it hasn't happened again since.

Re: Acer C720/C720P Chromebook

@SolarBoyMatt, @nariox and @hckr

Thanks for the feedback, maybe something wrong in my config (my guess power saving / tlp settings).
A bit more details on the wifi dropouts, usually the network stays connected but I see two phenomenons:
* I work on different remotes (connected to my LAN) via ssh and from time to time the prompt isn't responding.
* On the journald log I see a timesyncd error that from what I understand usually means that it can't reach ntp servers.

 systemd-timesyncd[179]: interval/delta/delay/jitter/drift ...

(try it yourself by running:  # journalctl -r|grep 'systemd-timesyncd'|grep 'interval/delta/delay/jitter/drift' )

Thanks, my router is fine, I don't have this issue with another machine, I'll try to disable ipv6.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=83677

Simon Farnsworth generated a huge patch that consolidates http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~ickle/linu … h=requests into one large patch in comment #53.

I applied and built it against linux 3.17.1 which is currently sitting in testing and seems to have fixed the major GPU hanging on my HP 14. It should work on the c720 too.

Before applying the patch, I can reproduce the hang by simultaneously playing flash videos/audio in Chromium and playing videos with mpv. No problems so far after testing it for a few hours. I have even enabled hardware video decoding for flash and it is still stable.

In case someone wants to know, I am using GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet", blacklisting ehci_hcd and ehci_pci, and John Lewis's firmware.

Just a note, the patch below for drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_display.c will fail because it has already been applied in Linus's 3.17 tree so it is safe to delete. Good luck with building and testing it on your own machines. Hopefully the devs can further isolate the exact patches need to fix the hang. In the meantime, at least we can enjoy a hang free time.

Re: Acer C720/C720P Chromebook

@justanhp14user

Thanks for sharing, I surely gonna try the patch.
I cannot reproduce the hangs by the method you posted but can by opening a few tabs on Chromium.

For the last two weeks or so I've been testing with the kernel parameters

i915.modeset=1 i915.semaphores=0 i915.use_mmio_flip=1 i915.enable_ppgtt=1

and didn't experience any hangs (except full unrecoverable system freezes).
I now started testing only with i915.semaphores=0 which seem also to bypass the bug.

p.s. Did you experienced full unrecoverable system freezes ?

I created an .icc profile for mine with a Spyder color meter.  DispWinGui loads it when I log in, but for a second there is a notable blue tint before the profile loads and trys to normalize things.

I put the .icc file up on github, but your machine might be different.  https://github.com/jquagga/AcerC720

Re: Acer C720/C720P Chromebook

@dhead
I have yet to run into any unrecoverable system freezes with the patches to 3.17.1.

It will generate some dmesg error with chromium while playing multiple flash videos. Chromium recovers from the errors automatically so it doesn't actually hang or require any intervention. I didn't even notice as it was playing 5+ videos and I only saw it in the logs.

[  851.940030] Watchdog[537]: segfault at 0 ip 00007f68a3192fb6 sp 00007f688d8a86d0 error 6 in chromium[7f689f2d2000+5b6c000]

I have managed to occasionally get the GPU to hang on wake up from suspend while playing videos. If you suspend while playing a video with mpv AND playing multiple videos from twitch.tv with chromium, it might hang the mpv process. Chromium recovers on its own without user intervention.

dmesg:

[ 4983.806366] [drm:ivybridge_set_fifo_underrun_reporting] *ERROR* uncleared fifo underrun on pipe A
[ 4983.808466] [drm:ivb_err_int_handler] *ERROR* Pipe A FIFO underrun

chromium:

[3947:3947:1019/160322:ERROR:gpu_process_transport_factory.cc(418)] Failed to establish GPU channel.

Overall, it is far more stable than before. It doesn't hang on my normal usage. However, if you go out of your way to actively break it, it will break but no more worse than without the patch.

Thanks for the detailed post, it's pretty much what I'm seeing with i915.semaphores=0 kernel parameter but I'm also experiencing very high memory usage when loading pages full of images in Chromium to the point it fills my 4GB RAM and consequently the page is crashing/killed.

Not going to list pro and cons since you can decide those yourself with some searching, but a few things. Crubuntu and Crouton/croagh, are two different things. Chrubuntu sets up a dual boot between Chrome OS and Ubuntu (with the Chrome OS kernel instead of the standard linux kernel, I believe), while Crouton/croagh, run the linux userland inside of a chroot along side of Chrome OS. The wiki describes how to replace Chrome OS with a pure Arch Linux install, as opposed to these methods.

Re: Acer C720/C720P Chromebook

Thx SolarBoyMatt, I've read the wiki before posting.
I don't like the idea to remove disable the Hardware Write Protection and flash an Chrome OS kernel because I like Chrome OS but I need to install ArchLinux for my studies in computer science.
The wiki describe how to Install Arch Linux in addition to Chrome OS by partitionning the SSD.
I was just wondering what's the difference beetween use ChruBuntu to partionning my drive or use Crouton/croagh.

This note isn't clear for me

Note: If you intend to stay using pre-installed SeaBIOS route and think you won't appreciate having to press Ctrl + L every time you boot to reach SeaBIOS then you can set Coreboot to boot to SeaBIOS by default. This currently must be done inside of Chrome OS and requires disabling the write protection (hardware and software), it might be a good idea to do this now so that you will not have to re-install Chrome OS later with recovery install media. If you're choosing to keep Chrome OS (installing Arch on external storage or on the internal storage side by side with Chrome OS then set SeaBIOS to default later.

The recovery install media from Chrome OS is automatic and safe ? Could it remove ArchLinux if I mishandling?

Re: Acer C720/C720P Chromebook

Anybody else had a problem with LXDE for the last week or so? After months of running without a hitch, I upgraded some packages a couple days ago and now get a blank light blue screen (the color of my default background) after login with LXDM. I'm pretty new to Arch and Linux in general, but I've tried all the fixes I can think of, and checked the Arch Wiki LXDE and the LXDE wiki for Arch without anything promising.

I've tried downgrading / rolling back recent updates to gtk, lxsession, and pcmanfm (within the last week or so, I'm sure I've updated and rebooted since then), no difference. I don't see anything too promising in the ~/.cache/lxsession/LXDE/run.log or in journalctl -b. I'm not getting anything with startx or startlxde (+/- sudo), just 4 messages from main.vala and no desktop.

Anybody else running LXDE on their C720 (linux-chromebook 3.16.5-1) with a problem?

EDIT: Should have mentioned, I have a cursor on the blank light blue screen, and right clicking still gets me an appropriate menu. I can open xterm from here, as well as pcmanfm.

EDIT2: Figured it out. Don't know if I didn't read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/LXDE carefully enough or if a new section has been added, but it clearly explains that ~/.config/lxsession/LXDE/desktop.conf needs to have a few lines added, which resolved my problem. The new lines:

[Session]
panel/command=lxpanel
panel/session=LXDE
file_manager/command=pcmanfm
file_manager/session=LXDE
desktop_manager/command=filemanager

Re: Acer C720/C720P Chromebook

@melkir

I've been using Chroagh for a while on my Samsung Arm Chromebook (LXDE target), it's alright but you probably will want to create some keybinding/mapping (maybe with xmodmap), I think there should some details on the wiki at Github.

You should know that you can follow the Chromebook wiki page and install Arch on a USB drive instead of the internal storage, but I'm not sure if restore from suspend can work without tweaking.
This is the most safest approach as you don't need to worry about Chrome OS recovering and wiping Arch after corruption due to an empty battery, thus you don't need to set the GBB flags, worst case scenario is that you might need enable back Developer Mode and enable SeaBIOS but your Arch installation will kept intact on the USB drive.
In fact, the installation of Arch on the USB drive can be done on another machine, if you choose doing that then on the Chromebook you only need to enable Developer Mode and SeaBIOS, and anytime you choose you can wipe ChromeOS / re-partition the internal storage, rsync your Arch rootfs from the USB drive and install Grub on the MBR.

Re: Acer C720/C720P Chromebook

Hi,
I'm back again, I have try Chroagh. Finally I prefer partionning my sdd and install Arch.
No loadkeys problem, no specialkeys problem and I can use the full memory of the computer and the last linux-kernel with patches.

Warning: If you do not set the GBB flags then your system might become corrupted on empty battery, Chrome OS will be forced to recover and you will lose your Arch Linux installation on the internal storage.

Does this mean that if my battery is empty my ArchLinux installation will be deleted ? Why does this happen ?
Set set_gbb_flags.sh will solve the problem ? And then if I set SeaBIOS as default (cause the white screen dev is annoying) do I loose the possibility to do a factory reset of ChromeOS one day ?

Re: Acer C720/C720P Chromebook

I haven't seen anyone here report that issue before, but I also have not had any desire to find out. I have personally held out on setting the GBB flags myself and I haven't let the battery fully drain before so I don't actually know what will happen. But as long as you still have access to Chrome OS, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to undo setting the GBB flags if needed.

If you're still planning on dual booting with Chrome OS, you might want to try not setting the short splash screen by running

# set_gbb_flags.sh 0×488

instead of what's listed on the wiki. Please don't try this until someone else can confirm this is alright, but it should set all of the same flags except for the GBB_FLAG_DEV_SCREEN_SHORT_DELAY flag, which would make the white splash screen very short.

---

That said, I've been kind of thinking it might be best for me to go back to Chrome OS on this device. While I haven't had any issues running Arch, I realize I haven't had the will/energy/time to fortify this machine better for Arch (eg. setting GBB flags, flashing custom ROM). I use this machine pretty heavily for school work, and losing my Arch install due to empty battery/accidentally hitting space on the splash screen, etc, would be pretty bad. When I installed it, I needed Arch for an Android development class I was taking for school, but now (and for what remains of my school career), all of the coding I need to do is done via SSH anyways. Even if I end up going through with restoring Chrome OS, I'll still be willing to build the linux-chromebook package (since I build it in chroot on a separate, more powerful machine anyways) until it isn't needed anymore, since I like this device so much. I just wouldn't be able to test it directly anymore.

Like I said, nothing's for sure yet, but it's just a heads up, since I somewhat recently volunteered to take over maintaining linux-chromebook. I'd still end up reinstall Arch when/if I can get around to doing those things.
