systemd with the proposed configuration indeas, containers etc. starts to resemble nix: http://nixos.org/nixos/about.html

Re: Next steps with systemd?

Interesting features but there are some problems. This will make transition difficult for the ddevelopers because the system structure need to be reorganized. Placing pacman's database in /usr is odd as it's place is supposed to be in /var. Also system administrators, or just plain arch users (as maintainers of their own pc) would have more things to think about, like what is supposed to go in /var or /usr. Then what does the sane default mean? Just the base group, or base+base-devel, or is it left for the user to think about? And doesn't having package based configurations violate "everything is a file" feature which defined linux for so long?

On the other hand OSX has "system restore" feature which is somewhat similar to dicussed planed features of systemd, and it's working great.

It also gets more similar to windows. There is the basic system (linux/windows), the runtime (gtk/.net), and then the applications. Only instead of installing everything in the same filesystem, everything has its own subvolume.

Re: Next steps with systemd?

It also gets more similar to windows

it reminds me vividly of the win 9x period where almost every application came with there own version of system libraries.
Windows xp had less problems with it, but the introduction of virtual folders in windows vista & later (to accomodate programs written with admin rights in mind) increased the problem again.

To me this suggest systemd developers are focussing more and more on developers/vendors instead of users.
I hope it doesn't result in users becoming third--class citizens ( first class would prob be  vendors , 2nd class would be devs.)

Disclaimer :
I don't hate systemd , it does have many good things.
The direction of systemd development just keeps adding reasons to avoid it as much as i can.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

"Arch Linux, a lightweight and flexible Linux® distribution that tries to Keep It Simple." I wonder how the KISS philosophy is holding up now since systemd is adopted in Arch Linux.

This thread has managed to stay on track above most of the systemd noise.  Attempts to derail it will not be tolerated.  Please stay on topic

Agreed ewaller.
As to that topic, either merge or nuke my own? (admit to not seeing this threadh which seems to have been made before mine, but with closely or similar general topic; though more specifically arch-targeted:

Re: Next steps with systemd?

Just to be clear -- this idea of a factory reset is something that has to be actively triggered by the user, correct? TBH it seems like a really silly idea, but it also seems pretty harmless. Who cares where pacman db is?

It won't make me as sad as losing netcfg did, at least.
