[Solved] Starting plasma 5 (after updating)

After updating my system today, I can no longer start plasma 5. When I type startx, X tries to launch and closes immediately. My .xinitrc only contains exec startkde.

The packages that were updated today are:

[2014-10-24 23:35] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman -Syu'
[2014-10-24 23:35] [PACMAN] synchronizing package lists
[2014-10-24 23:36] [PACMAN] starting full system upgrade
[2014-10-24 23:36] [PACMAN] upgraded acpid (2.0.23-1 -> 2.0.23-2)
[2014-10-24 23:36] [PACMAN] upgraded kauth (5.3.0-1 -> 5.3.0-2)
[2014-10-24 23:36] [PACMAN] upgraded kconfig (5.3.0-1 -> 5.3.0-2)
[2014-10-24 23:36] [PACMAN] upgraded kdesu (5.3.0-1 -> 5.3.0-2)
[2014-10-24 23:36] [PACMAN] upgraded kio (5.3.0-1 -> 5.3.0-2)
[2014-10-24 23:36] [PACMAN] upgraded kinit (5.3.0-1 -> 5.3.0-2)
[2014-10-24 23:36] [PACMAN] upgraded kdelibs4support (5.3.0-1 -> 5.3.0-2)
[2014-10-24 23:36] [PACMAN] upgraded kde-cli-tools (5.1.0.1-1 -> 5.1.0.1-2)
[2014-10-24 23:36] [PACMAN] upgraded khotkeys (5.1.0.1-1 -> 5.1.0.1-2)
[2014-10-24 23:36] [PACMAN] upgraded kwin (5.1.0.1-1 -> 5.1.0.1-2)
[2014-10-24 23:36] [PACMAN] upgraded kxmlgui (5.3.0-1 -> 5.3.0-2)
[2014-10-24 23:36] [PACMAN] upgraded libxml2 (2.9.1-5 -> 2.9.2-1)

Update:

I get a message saying that /usr/lib/libexec/kf5/start_kdeinit_wrapper does not exist. In the kinit package, there is the file /usr/lib/kf5/start_kdeinit_wrapper. The package kinit was updated today, so I think this is the cause of the issue. Is there a way to know if the previous kinit package contained /usr/lib/libexec/kf5/start_kdeinit_wrapper ?

Re: [Solved] Starting plasma 5 (after updating)

I'm not sure if it is related but with plasma-next from the repos sddm was freezing on the login screen (sddm no longer responsive) after typing in my password.  This occurred after rebooting following today's update.  'journalctl -b' didn't show anything obvious nor did dmesg (I was able to use a virtual terminal).

I went ahead and installed plasma-desktop-git (I often switch back and forth when I find serious bugs) from the AUR (and I also reinstalled sddm just in case) and upon reboot it worked with no other changes.  I had tried an extra reboot before installing the 'plasma-desktop-git' package as well with the same result (freeze).  Just another data point if nothing else I guess.

The kde5 packages are being rebuilt to get rid of the "libexec" dir.

Thanks Scimmia!

As a temporary workaround, one can edit line 363 of /usr/bin/startkde and replace it with :

LD_BIND_NOW=true /usr/lib/kf5/start_kdeinit_wrapper --kded +kcminit_startup
