Xfce doesn't start.

Hi. I've just installed the package xfce4 and may be I chose the wrong libgl when I was prompted so the xfce isn't initiating, I've chosen nvidea and my machine is a windows surface pro 1. I've tried to remove the package libgl but it isn't found but weirdly when I try to install libgl it say that I'm actually trying to reinstall without the options. I went to look the log file in /var/log/Xorg.0.log I get the first warning saying that it couldn't load module intel, modsetting, fbdev and then vesa, "No drives available", "No screens found".

Can anybody relate with this issue? What sould I do to start xfce properly? Thank you very much.

Did you set up Xorg ?

Re: Xfce doesn't start.

ewaller thank you very much for the quick reply, No I didn't configure Xorg I'm following a setup for virtualbox except that I'm omitting anything related to virtualbox in the setup. I look up Xorg and it seems that's already a default configuration and it should work for most setups. Do you know how to uninstall the Xfce completely even any residual config files so in the installation I'd be prompted again to chose the libgl? I shouldn't have chosen nvidea because graphics card on surface pro is actually an Intel HD4000.
I've tried:
sudo pacman -Rdd xfce4
but I'm not prompted to chose the libgl.

What guide are you following?

Re: Xfce doesn't start.

rsegecin, your two posts here are some of the most confusing posts I've seen on these forums.  Almost every single sentence seems to bring in a completely new and unrelated point.  You say you followed a guide for virtual box but ignored the virtual box parts - are you running in virtual box or not?  You seem to want xfce but the only apparent problem is that you installed the wrong video driver - but then you ask how to uninstall xfce.  Why do you want to uninstall xfce?

Please slow down and walk us through what you have done, and what you would like to achieve.

First thank you Trilby for the reply.
Sorry any confusion I've caused. I'm not installing in virtualbox, I'm trying to make a dual boot with windows in my surface pro. I wanted to uninstall xfce to install it again choosing the right libgl. ewaller I'm not following any specific tutorial on the internet because I didn't find any particular example for making a dual boot in surface pro with arch linux. I'm mashing the tutorial found in http://wideaperture.net/blog/?p=3851 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=METZCp_ … C&index=47.

I decided to reinstall everything again and apparently I'm failing to execute the xfce because the xorg-server isn't starting. I runned the command startx and this is the output:

Thank you to reply Scimmia. Progress everyone! I just installed the driver xf86-video-intel and startx showed the terminal and the clock (xorg-twm xorg-xclock xterm), but when I do startxfce4 the screens goes black and it's very difficult to reboot the machine. I've also instaled lib32-mesa-libgl and libva-intel-driver.

I've just noticed that I'm able to start xfce4 from startx, but I've got the following error message:

Re: Xfce doesn't start.

I found this solution http://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=7548 but as I might not be connected to any network what should I put into <local machine ip>??

$ xfdesktop --display=<local_machine_ip>:1.0
$ xfwm  --display=<local_machine_ip>:1.0
$ xfce4-session  --display=<local_machine_ip>:1.0

Re: Xfce doesn't start.

But the article you linked to is for trying to REMOTELY connect to Xfce. Is that what you're doing? If that is indeed the solution, wouldn't

xfdesktop --display=localhost:1.0
:
:

work? Or 127.0.0.1?

Re: Xfce doesn't start.

I found a solution. For the people who might stumble in the same problem here it is: create a directory on "/home/[new dir.]", copy all files from /root to "/home/[new dir.]", copy the file from "/etc/skel/.xinitrc" to "/home/[new dir.]" and edit it uncommenting "exec startxfce4" line, change the permission of all files copied in the new directory so a normal user can access, I did "sudo chmod -R rinaldi=rwx /home/[new dir.]/" and it should do the work. big_smile

I've installed the packages xf86-video-vesa, xf86-video-fbdev and xf86-video-modesetting as well because the "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" was weaning about but I'm not sure if had copied those files before I wouldn't need to do have done it.

Thank you everyone.

Re: Xfce doesn't start.

rsegecin,

I am happy you have arrived at a solution that seems to work for you.  But, I strongly advise anyone reading this thread not consider following your lead.  Copying unspecified things from root and changing permissions to them all so they are executable by a normal user is a disaster waiting to happen.  It might work until the next update of anything comes along at which point the entire house of cards will collapse in a undecipherable , non-maintainable heap of scrap.   Whatever you do, don't use this system for anything more valuable than something you would use to scrape gum off of your shoe.

I really suggest you start over using nothing but the Arch iso and the Arch Beginners guide.  Your current method throwing oatmeal at the wall hoping something sticks is somewhat sub-optimum.

Whoa...

I'm not sure I'm following what you are/were trying to do.  If you wanted to start XFCE automatically when you run startx, you need the correct Xorg packages (sounds like you have them), the correct video drivers (you should have them now), and a ~/.xinitrc file with   "exec startxfce4" uncommented.

If you don't  have a ~/.xinitrc file, Xorg will use /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc. By default, "startxfce4" is  not in that file, which is why it wasn't starting automatically with startx.  However, the xclock and xterm  programs are, which is why they appeared when you ran startx. The only thing I can see in what you did that would fix it is copy over the .xinitrc file to your home directory and uncomment startxfce4, since it sounds like X was using the /etc/xinit/xinitrc file in the absence of a ~/.xinitrc.

I could also be  completely missing what your problem was.

Re: Xfce doesn't start.

Ivan all that I want to do is to start xfce desktop enviroment regardless the command that I need to run. But apparently there's a security issue as ewaller mentioned. So I deleted "/home/rinaldi" directory and copied just the .xinitrc and uncommented "exec startxfce4" I took a look in the wiki but there was nothing else that I should do, so I finally ran startx and startxfce4 but the DE didn't show it says that it couldn't work .XAuthority file, I couldn't output the message into a file. I'll try to get the message right and I'll post here again.

He did enlighten you - except trainwreck was too kind.  What you have done is a horrible idea and it is a complete mess.  I can't imagine anyone can help you with your current set up - there are just far too many things wrong due to your own unusual interventions.

rsegecin wrote:

Where was this mentioned.  What ewaller did suggest is the only sound advice you could be provided with at this point:

ewaller wrote:

Also, for future reference, running X as root is a bad idea.  And using 'sudo' to start X when you are already logged in as root is a bad idea and absurdly silly.  So back to ewaller's suggestion: follow the well-maintained and proper documentation in the wiki instead of trying to make up your own random concoctions of commands.

Re: Xfce doesn't start.

You're right Trylby, jasonwryan did enlighten me he was just too brief though, I'd like to hear his argument and expand. I understood "disaster waiting to happen" as Ivan said as a security issue that I'd possibly have. I'm making "concoctions of commands" because already followed the wiki documentation and may be missed something so I'm trying to everything that I can to solve my problem.

I don't know if I'm making right this time but now I created "/home/rinaldi" dir. and changed it's owner doing "sudo chown rinaldi /home/rinaldi", copied .xinitrc and uncommented "exec startxfce4", now I've been able to start xfce4 as a normal user.

I just saw the confusion, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/xfce doesn't mention that you should own /home/[user name] directory nor for you to belong in group with privileges such as wheel's group to be able to run startxfce4 straighaway.

Re: Xfce doesn't start.

The wiki doesn't tell you to change ownership of your users directory because if you created the user properly (rather than manually creating directories and shuffling around files) then your user would already own that directory and everything in it.

You also don't need to be in the wheel group to start Xfce, which is why that is not in the wiki.  The wheel group is (commonly) for using sudo.  Neither sudo nor root access is required to run X.  In fact, if you've been trying to launch X with sudo, that would explain all of the issues you had in this thread after the video driver was installed.

It's hard to say if it's fixed without a full list of commands that you ran, which is obviously impractical to post now. The only way to be sure is to reinstall and start fresh. I'd be concerned about incorrect permissions with the way it is now.

In any case, starting Xfce with the startx command (as a normal user) only requires the necessary X packages, video drivers, Xfce packages, and a ~/.xinitrc file with "exec startxfce4". Permissions shouldn't be an issue, nor should the wheel group enter into the equation.
