Re: All browsers freeze system with some pages on x86_64+nvidia[SOLVED]

Update: FF still freezes the whole freaking system just when you launch it. Using chromium to navigate web. Netsurf for simpler sites. System is fully up-to-date.

Edit:  when launched from a terminal, FF seems to work normally...

Nvidia is just the pits (one works and the other doesn't).

Re: All browsers freeze system with some pages on x86_64+nvidia[SOLVED]

Things seem to have really stabilized this time. I keep my fingers crossed.

Update: everything works OK (really tested). The key was lowering processor clock from 3100 MHz to 3000. And now it's rock solid. Why it worked at 3100 in Mint and XP, and was unstable in Arch, it's a mistery to me.
Nevertheless, while it works, fine for me.

Marking as solved.

Are you sure it was running at 3100 in XP/Ubuntooslow?  Of course, Ubuntooslow has been using LTS, not sure if that is still their main squeeze.  This could also be one of these "undocumented features" that is silently tweaked with XP drivers.  How did you set the bus speed (BIOS or other)?

I'm sure. Conky showed the same CPU speed at Arch and Mint. The cpu clock was set using BIOS options (multiplier settings are unlocked for this CPU).

Re: All browsers freeze system with some pages on x86_64+nvidia[SOLVED]

What package does it use in Mint?  304-xxx? Ubuntooslow doesn't always use the same modules that Arch does.  I'm looking at the dmesg of the good machine and it says something about losing 64MB for not turning IOMMU on in BIOS.  Can't find anything that looks like it would turn this option on in BIOS.  Then it says it is going to not use the AGP mode, instead it will be using PCI mode.  Maybe this is something to check on the trouble machine.  AMD-V doesn't have IOMMU function as it is enabled at all times, only on multi-processor Intels do I need to do this for VT-x.  So looks like I don't need to do either on either machine.

Re: All browsers freeze system with some pages on x86_64+nvidia[SOLVED]

I took the nvidia motherboarded machine that was using the 6100 and put in another video card (older Radeon) in the PCI-E slot.  I didn't really find any options on this machine to change the PC clock.  I removed all of the nvidia modules and replaced it with the ATI/Radeon modules.  It all seemed to work good at first, just like it did with the nvidia on board video card.  It would now be using the PCI-Ex16 video card.  Apparently, though it is still locking up at times just like before.  There must just be something wrong with the chipset on this machine.
