Hi!
Once I could fix a problem with starting of the X server by adding correct video drivers (it was when I tested to make a live cd) but for a while ago came an update for Xorg and now problems began again (testing a normal installation). I tried to reinstall and followed guides on the Internet but still has the problem of starting.
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error.
What does it mean?
I am still testing in the VMware, reinstalled a few times with a different settings.
After update I got a note once that it can cause some problems because of the new daemon configuration settings and abilities of running as regular user. I tested to start it as a root and a normal user without happy ending.

What guides on the internet? What settings did you change when you reinstalled?
How exactly are you starting X? Post the whole log.

Should «Xorg.wrap» be in the «/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/Xorg.wrap» folder?
I tested but still the same problem.
Tested with settings for Xorg.wrap with no good result.
I followed the Arch install Guide.
I think that some one must try to install it in the VMware as see if it will work or confirm my problems.

/usr/bin/Xorg.wrap
Post your /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config and the logs.

I'm having this same problem within my VMWare Player. I followed the explicit steps shown here on the ArchWiki. X does seemingly start, but the only update to the screen is it becomes black with a cursor and then simply freezes, no updates transpire beyond that point. I have to do a Alt+SysRq+i to kill the process. I tried using the vesa driver instead of the vmware driver with the same result. Thinking it might have been something I did to my install I created a brand new virtual machine disk, reinstalled Arch from scratch (from the newest ISO available). Everything worked as expected, so I proceeded to install xorg-server along with xorg-twm xorg-xclock and xterm and then ran startx just to see if it would display at all, no such luck (I also made the appropriate Xwrapper.config and systemd socket/service on the fresh install). Wondering if anyone else is having this issue as it may be VMWare specific.

My xorg wrap files are the same as in the arch guide Systemd User. I followed the whole and made all services and configuration as in it but... all errors are the same:
Error in the Xorg.0.log: vmware(0): drmDropMaster failed: Invalid argument.
And other errors:
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error.
without any changes.
Have installed a gdm desktop manager and it runs automatically without any problems and I can start and stop it with «systemctl start gdm» (after I do stop/start gdm few times then it hangs, cannot switch even between tty), from command line but startx still cannot be run from command line, still same errors.

My journalctl log you can see here «journalctl -xl» and «journalctl -o json-pretty », «journalctl -o verbose».
How can I make journal empty, to begin create new logs and remove old, otherwise it is so big?
I have tested to defaultserver=/usr/bin/X to defaultserver=/usr/bin/Xorg.wrap in the /usr/bin/startx script, but still the same errors.
Any other logs/configs?

My logs are exactly the same as Andy_Crowd. I'm guessing that this thread can be merged with the following:

Wherein the fix seems to be downgrading the packages.

If the desktop manager can start the X server and load «window manager» without any problems, then it is something to do with a command line and environment variables, I need to find a way same as desktop manager using to start the X server.
The «lightdm» might be the last chose for WM in Live CD.

Copied "X11" configuration from ArchBang and changed zsh to bash as default console shell by editing customize_airootfs.sh file.
Now it is SOLVED!
Thanks for your help.
