Switched from open source drivers to catalyst, but cannot get X to start. Xorg log file throws the error (EE) AIGLX error: failed to open /usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/dri/fglrx_dri.so, error[/usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/dri/fglrx_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. Any idea how to fix this? I've seen some supposed solutions for Ubuntu, quite reluctant to try them out in fear of breaking things even more.
I've installed the proprietary drivers through Vi0L0's repository, and followed all the instructions in ArchWiki (blacklisting 'radeon' module, adding 'nomodeset' to boot), but I don't get past the boot messages, and fglrxinfo shows Error: unable to open display (null)...

My laptop is ASUS K55N-DS81 with APU A8-4500M and HD7640G graphics.M8 I have the same hardware configuration.
Now using Arch + KDE and Arch + XFCE without problems with Vi0l0's Catalyst-hook packages.
However I'm able to run GNOME 3.14 only with open source drivers. Overheat problems are gone, but actually I get some problems of power consumption: laptop's battery life is still better with Catalyst (using amdconfig --px-igpu and battery oriented power management).
Do you are using some power management configuration with open drivers? I tried dpm + poweroff discrete gpu (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI#Powersaving) but I'm unable to set battery mode, and overall battery life isn't very good.
Those profiles never really worked for me. I changed profile to low, but it doesn't seem to affect anything. Battery is not an issue for me. 95% of time I use my laptop on AC.
Gnome >3.10 worked for me, but as someone mentioned in previous post gdm will have to be downgraded to 3.10, or use lightdm if you want it with fglrx.
And I don't know about discrete GPU, I think that mine 7640G is integrated graphics.
But overall I'm satisfied, because I finally have everything working out-of-box and I can do anything without cooling down my laptop. I had to put some things under laptop to make better airflow. I was also planning to buy a cooling pad

Making a symbolic link from /usr/lib/xorg/modules to /usr/X11R6/lib64/modules worked for me. Create the directory /usr/X11R6/lib64 if it does not exist.

was never the problem. fglrx will find this lib anyway, its throwing error because its not finding it in default (for AMD/ubuntu/whatever) directory. Making X11R6 symlink should never be the solution, and looks nasty. Check if /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/fglrx_dri.so exists and ignore this error.
Please paste whole Xorg.0.log, so we could look whats really going on.
Also:
fglrxinfo shows Error: unable to open display (null)
- it's normall (for catalyst) you need to start X, otherwise it will always show this error
As for the GNOME 3.14 - wish I have more time to look at this closer, I catched problems with GNOME latelly (but before 3.14) - it started to crash before start - I spent not much time on it, but didn't find solution. Fixing it is not that important for me right now, since im planning to install arch on btrfs 2xSSD . Its just the time... Wish I had some kind of clone of myself with shared awareness .
But anyhow I think that GNOME 3.14 support could be real problem atm (at least with unmodified gnome packages), afaik 3.14 is really close to wayland and catalyst doesn't even have egl.

Exactly, I came across the symlinking solution in some Ubuntu forums but it seemed more like a workaround and definely not a permanent solution.
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/fglrx_dri.so does exists in my system.
Please paste whole Xorg.0.log, so we could look whats really going on.
Here it goes. For some reason when I run startx, the log file created is Xorg.6.log. Not sure if the numbering is relevant (there are no other Xorg log files under /var/log)

fglrxinfo shows Error: unable to open display (null)
- it's normall (for catalyst) you need to start X, otherwise it will always show this error
Problem is, I can't start X. It is supposed to start after booting, but it hangs, so the only way I have is to log into tty2 and call startx, which throws me back to tty2 after attempting to start X.
As for the GNOME 3.14 - wish I have more time to look at this closer, I catched problems with GNOME latelly (but before 3.14) - it started to crash before start - I spent not much time on it, but didn't find solution. Fixing it is not that important for me right now, since im planning to install arch on btrfs 2xSSD . Its just the time... Wish I had some kind of clone of myself with shared awareness .
But anyhow I think that GNOME 3.14 support could be real problem atm (at least with unmodified gnome packages), afaik 3.14 is really close to wayland and catalyst doesn't even have egl.

Yes, I used aticonfig --initial to generate my xorg.conf. I installed acpi and acpid, the problem persists but there seem to be some changes to the output when I run startx, complaining that xterm was not found, so I guess startx was trying to launch it - weird because I was using GDM+GNOME with xf86-video-ati before installing catalyst, and I installed LightDM in order to use the proprietary drivers (apparently GDM is not supported). Editing the default WM in ~/.xinitrc allows me to get into GNOME with startx, but I can't get it to work on boot - which right now I think might be a LightDM issue.

Vi0l0, just a little question: is it possibile to use radeon and catalyst on the same
machine switching with pxp script?
I have a hd5450 with three head (DVI, VGA and HDMI). From what I knew
only two head can be used at the same time ... but I tried a a Mint Live DVD
using OS radeon driver and it let me use all the outputs simultaneously.
So, I'd like to have a setup with catalyst and radeon. The first if I need
3d acceleration, the second if I need to use a three monitor setup.
At the moment I'm using catalyst-total and I just installed OS driver.
But I think there could be some problems with the libraries ...

Sure, look at /usr/bin/pxp_switch_catalyst script, its available on catalyst-test(/total) and catalyst-libgl(split from catalyst-utils). Since its a bash you can easily modify it to your needs (ie when using custom 20-radeon.conf).Basically `pxp_switch_catalyst amd` will switch to catalyst, `pxp_switch_catalyst intel` will switch to open source, so intel or radeon or noveau , last i didnt check actually .

Actually if you didn't mess with your system you should be able to have both oss radeon and catalyst installed and switch between them with my pxp_switch_catalyst script, only reboot is required. It's working well on my system, so should on yours.
pxp_switch_catalyst in a basic way
( so if you don't want to change anything in you system, which means no graphic bootloader modifies [NO nomodeset NOR radeon.modeset=0 flags added, also NO radeon.dpm=1,no vga, no video nor any gfx boot option], and don't have xorg.conf(.d) with radeon inside )
AND if you only have one graphics card AND it is radeon, should work as follows:
- pxp_switch_catalyst amd - this command will switch to catalyst, xorg.conf is set to use fglrx, fglrx is added to modules load, reboot and you are working on catalyst.
Short story: at boot it will load fglrx because its inside modules-load, it will also load radeon module becase we didn't add nomodeset, but Xserver will use fglrx because it's inside xorg.conf, and it should work well.
- pxp_switch_catalyst intel - this command will switch to oss driver, so in our case to radeon (command could misslead, yes, but its because its designed to pxp switch), script removes fglrx from modules-load, and removes xorg.conf, reboot and you are working on oss radeon.
Short story: script removes fglrx from modules-load so it's not loaded, radeon is loaded, xorg.conf doesn't exist so by default xserver is using radeon.
BTW I installed new arch on new drives, and all seems to work fine, GDM didn't start so I used KDM. All problems are gone and GNOME 3.14 works pretty nice.

I had a similar experience, ended up with auto-login and startx afterboot. Might give a shot at KDM later, right now it's working as it is.

For me it does not work with catalyst and gnome 1.14. Tried gdm and libgdm 1.10 and kdm, did not help. Lots of messages like this:

I like gnome. So this is bad. Also, I am using a Asus U38N Laptop, and there are issues with the open source driver - the built-in screen simply stays black. So that is no option... It could be some issues with screen resolution (randr...) , but I don't know... all kinda strange.

Sorry to bump in so abruptly in middle of Gnome crisis. I have Gnome without gdm (using startx) and XBMC on my living room PC, Gnome is autostarting XBMC. When I set XBMC to put display (it's a plasma TV) to sleep after 5 minutes, the CPU usage goes to 100% (after 5 min). I have read that Catalyst had problem with DPMS. Is that still an issue and if so is there a solution? Should I look somewhere else? XBMC debug log doesn't report any errors. DPMS signal sent and that is it. TV goes blank as it should i suppose. GPU is HD 8470D (A6-6400K APU). Vsync is set to ~"On, unless application says otherwise".

All that "cur_cycle = 3, issue_cycle = -1, ready_cycle = 1" stuff may actually be unrelated to the gnome issues. I've found hints of similar outputs in a flight simulator console out and in minecraft logs using google. They also popped up in the output of wine when I played StarCraft 1. Does anyone have any idea where those might come from (or how to find out where they're comming from)? The only upside ATM is that in KDE, I can set my screen resolution to 640x480, which means StarCraft can be played fullscreen - previously, in gnome 800x600 was the minimum.
Regardles, "Gnomee crisis" is aptly put... What can be done? Gnome is not exactly easy to downgrade, ( I tried downgrading parts, did not help), and I'm not even sure what the issue really is. The logs are not really all that helpful. I mean there's no real error that I've seen so far. Also, KDE looks different (read ugly in parts), and the usability is quite different.
Ah, I haven't had any issues with dpms or so yet, however.

The issue of incompatibility between GNOME 3.14 and Catalyst (up to 14.9) reported by many peple is quite strange:
it's not only related with GDM, cause me and other people can't start GNOME session with any display manager (neither directly with .xinitrc and startx).
However some other people was able to start it without problems, apparently using catalyst-total from AUR.
We need some addictional information to understand what's going wrong.

Now all of a sudden,I can use free drivers and Voila no gpu spinning, I can log into Gnome no prob, what the hell is going on?
From what I can tell it has something to do with the new Kernel, Mesa got an update as well Mesa 10.3.2

I already messed around with the catalyst-stuff for my new R285 but wasn't able to get it going. I want to start from scratch now and wanted to know if this is the (theoreticaly) correct way to do it:
1. add xorg115 repo
2. install all the xorg stuff
3. download the src from http://catalyst.wirephire.com/tarball/14.30-285/
4. untar it & build package with makepkg -s --asroot
5. install package with pacman
6. 'systemctl enable catalyst-hook' & 'systemctl start catalyst-hook'
7. reboot
8. check with fglrxinfo
Is there another (easier?) way to get the R285 up and running? And what has to be done when support has been merged inmto the main catalyst package? How do I upgrade my system then? Hopefully you can clear my confusion here... Thank you in advance.

Well... it seems like I kinda fixed gnome 3.14 problem on my older arch instance (Im not talking about gdm, im pretty sure it won't be resolved anytime soon, just gnome 3.14). BTW this instance is 6 years old, was moved through 3 PCs, 3 disks (and 3 filesystem types), it survided 3 different sysinits and one `rm -rf /lib` "misclick" and is still lightfast. i love arch.
At first I updated all my packages with pacman and cower (gnome-applets, gnome-panel). It didn't help, none of my users was able to login.
.xsession-errors was clean after gnome crash, journalctl -b informed that libnm-gtk.so.0 was missing, so I reinstalled libnm-gtk package.
And it seems to solved my issue - now gnome 3.14 works fine on any account except my main one where its logging (to journalctl) something like:

afaik stable catalyst 14.9 supports 285, simply use packages from [catalyst-stable] (or lets say catalyst-total@AUR) and [xorg115] repos.
Also since theres no release notes for ubuntus driver - I would also check it (catalyst-test@AUR or [catalyst] repo).

Ah thank you, didn't know that your repo has r285 by now. If I want to have "bleeding edge" driver, I should use [catalyst], shouldn't I?
€dit: Just tried 'catalyst-test' from AUR. That one definetly doesn't work with R285. Had to "downgrade" back to the special R285-Version. startx and my cinnamon desktop only start with the r285-version... Wasn't able to try out your repo because I have some dependencies that can't be solved that easy. At least for me.

So the suggested way of making catalyst work on gnome 3.14 is using the [catalyst] repo, xorg 1.16 from official repos, reinstalling libnm-gtk and using a dm different from GDM (or just console login and startx)? The other thing which is still not clear to me, is if i have a laptop with an integrated and a discrete graphics card, do I still need the *-pxp packages, or is PowerXpress already implemented in the main package?
