Hey guys,
i have a usb 2.0 drive that stopped working.
On windows is simply says that it was not able to connect the device.
If i plug it in my usb 2 port on arch nothing happens (neither lsblk nor dmesg show something), if i plug it in my usb 3.0 port i get the following in dmesg: (still nothing with lsblk)
[ 64.333063] usb 3-4: new full-speed USB device number 2 using xhci_hcd
[ 64.493141] usb 3-4: device descriptor read/64, error -71

[ 66.153939] hub 3-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 4I have to mention that the drive gets extremly hot after ~10-15 seconds, so there might be a hardware issue.
Any chance to get it working again?

Googling that error message (the read/64, error -71) does indeed suggest it is a hardware issue.
This is further supported by it also not working in windows.
The drive fails on more than one port, but do other drives work? If so, this would confirm that it is a hardware issue with the drive (or cable).
Start narrowing it down: test the same drive with other cables, other drives with the same cable, etc.

Hey, thanks for your reply.
Thats what i guessed ![]()
Yes, other drives work with the same port / cables, and this drive does not work on any pc.
Thanks for your help, guess i have to trash it if there is nothing i can do ![]()

I don't know about that - but it definitely narrows down what the problem is. We do have some hardware experts around here, but I'm not one of them. Depending on the cost of the drive, or importance of the data on the drive, there may still be other options. If this is an external drive, is there an enclosure the drive itself can be removed from - it is possible for an enclosure to go bad while the drive itself could still be read.

Is (was) it a drive enclosure with a spinning drive, or is it a flash memory (thumb drive) type device?

Flash drive, and only 16gb without important data.
Yet it would still bother me to throw it away, because it is nice and small (and fast! 12mb/s write with usb 2.0) and because i normally never ever throw someting away.

Same here, but it works when I connect a USB 3.0 combatible drive.

Check the warranty - some of them have lifetime support where it just costs you the price of a return to get it replaced.

I solved my problem. It only affected the front USB ports, so I knew it had to be a wire problem. I had connected both the usb 3.0 and 2.0 connectors from the case to the motherboard. It should only be the usb 3.0 one.
