Problem setting up Desktop environment

I'm having trouble getting my DE to start working. I've installed the necessary xorg packages and I've installed i3 packages. I can't get it to work though. I've tried making a .xinitrc but that didn't work and when I try to use exec i3 as a command it just logs me out without giving me an error. How do I get this to work? I want to set it up so that as soon as I log in, i3 starts up.

What??

What DE are you trying to set up? Everything you describe sounds like you just want i3 as a WM. What have you done? What is in your xinitrc? What do you mean it "didn't work"? What happened? What are the error messages? What are the results? Give us something to work with, we aren't mind readers.

Sorry, I have a bad habit of using DE and WM interchangibly, but yes I want i3 as an WM. This is my first time attempting to setup a WM manually. What I've done so far was copy the xinitrc file in the /etc/X11/xinit directory to my home directory (mainly because it wasn't in the /etc/skel directory), changed it to .xinitrc and added exec i3 at the bottom. Didn't do a thing. Ran startx and I got this error: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_gM2n … sp=sharing. And if I use the command exec i3, it just logs me out.

Are you sure you "installed the necessary xorg packages"? It looks like you don't have a valid video driver installed.

I've installed xorg-xinit, xorg-twm, xorg-xclock, xterm, xorg-server, xorg-server-utils.

Agreed. The lack of a video driver is the first problem. But if you did as you say you'll also have to actually edit the xinitrc that you copied or it will ~~fail for not finding twm and xterm.~~ run twm instead of i3.

A bunch of the directories that these make mention of for some reason don't exist on my system, like /etc/xdg/autostart/vmware-user.desktop.The error its giving me after installing those vmware tools seems to have changed. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_gM2n … sp=sharing.

That file doesn't exist because you have not followed the instructions on that page yet.

I have no idea where this question is coming from. If you want help here, please spend more time reading the wiki and formulating clear questions rather than quickly typing half formed ideas that will only confuse your would-be helpers.
