Right, those are equivalent options, one for pci-assign and one for vfio-pci.  Neither do anything to enable interrupt remapping, they just allow use of the driver without interrupt remapping enabled.

But how does it works without interrupt remapping then? Using the emulated, kvm vcpu's PIC? Or something?

Without interrupt remapping you simply run with the risk that a malicious guest can craft DMA writes to interrupt addresses and cause badness on the host.  With interrupt remapping, the interrupt remapping hardware only allows the guest to trigger interrupts that it has access to.  There's a difference in the format of the interrupt when enabled, but it's effectively an invisible security feature when enabled.

Is it possible yet to passthrough Intel IGD HD4600? If yes, what more is needed compared to Radeon?

There's some prototype code, but it would take quite a bit to assemble it into something useful.  The problem with IGD is that it's not a self contained device like a discrete GPU.  There's the PCI device at 00:02.0, but the drivers use device IDs from other parts of the chipset to identify the GPU, so it requires changing the VM host bridge and potentially even the PCH bridge IDs.  IGD also makes use of opregions and GTTs that are described by other devices and live outside the PCI resources of the 00:02.0 device itself, so we need to come up with ways to get access to those.  Effectively, while a discrete GPU like Radeon is discrete, IGD is smeared across the chipset, making assignment much more difficult.

Thanks for explanation... but still don't know if its possible or not? Whats that i915 patch for then? Thought it was for this?

https://github.com/UmbraMalison/qemu-igdvfio <-- Is this the prototype code or is there more?

I know this is some kind of off-topic, but what I've quickly read on google is that it is possible to passthrough it with Xen. Is it possible to have both Xen and QEMU/KVM at the same time running, Xen for IGD, QEMU/KVM for rest?

Thanks man!

Re: KVM VGA-Passthrough using the new vfio-vga support in kernel =>3.9

Hello again !

I finally successed in passing the virtualized system's output via a vnc server as Alex Williamson suggested and it's working fine.

Ok, performances and quality are pretty much altered but I achieved to get something acceptable, and I feel ok with it since I will use this only 1 or 2 days a month. I will use this virtual system to develop/compile/test games we develop on Windows while I'll be at my mate's house (of course, I could use an extra hard drive or multiple OS boot, but I feel more comfortable coding on linux).

I have tested multiple vnc solutions and the most performant was TightVNC + DFMirage mirror display Driver (Windows Guest) combined with TurboVNC (Linux Host).
I also tested UltraVNC + mirror driver (Win Guest) combined with TurboVNC (Linux Host) but the performances wern't satisfying.

I saw some "Microsoft Windows" mirror drivers too. Not tested it yet.

Next step: write an article on my experience. (hope it will help the french community)

[Edit]: Just noticed "aw" stands for Alex Williamson... Thank you for your top quality posts, it helped me a lot !

Nei, it doesn't help. VM is still suspect to crashes when launched almost immediately after host system startup.

Re: KVM VGA-Passthrough using the new vfio-vga support in kernel =>3.9

Hello guys,

I have been using VGA pass through for quite some time now, with the option -cpu Haswell. Everything works fine, however now I want to change over to -cpu host. If I do this my Windows 8.1 guest will boot into repair mode, try fix stuff and then reboot. This continues endlessly.
My settings:

sudo -E qemu-system-x86_64 \
-enable-kvm \
-M q35 \
-m 8G \
-mem-path /dev/hugepages \
-mem-prealloc \
-cpu Haswell,hv-time,kvm=off \
-smp 4,sockets=1,cores=4,threads=1 \
-device vfio-pci,host=00:1b.0 \
-bios /usr/share/qemu/bios.bin \
-vga none \
-device ioh3420,bus=pcie.0,addr=1c.0,multifunction=on,port=1,chassis=1,id=root.1 \
-device vfio-pci,host=01:00.0,bus=root.1,addr=00.0,multifunction=on,x-vga=on \
-nographic \
-device ahci,bus=pcie.0,id=ahci \
-drive file=/var/lib/libvirt/images/Windows8.1.img,id=disk,format=raw,cache=none \
-device ide-hd,bus=ahci.0,drive=disk \
-device vfio-pci,host=07:00.0,bus=pcie.0 \
-device vfio-pci,host=00:19.0,bus=pcie.0 \
-drive file=/dev/sdb1,id=mmo,format=raw,cache=none \
-device ide-hd,bus=ahci.1,drive=mmo \
-drive file=/home/thor/Windows/Windows-Steam.img,id=steam,format=raw,cache=none \
-drive file=/dev/sdc1,id=music,format=raw,cache=none \
-device ide-hd,bus=ahci.3,drive=music \
-net none \
-serial none \
-parallel none \
-rtc base=localtime \
-device ide-hd,bus=ahci.2,drive=steam

What is causing this? I shouldnt have to reinstall the guest for simply changing the CPU? (My physical CPU is a Haswell after all)
The reason for why I want "-cpu host" is that Nvidia checks if I have a valid CPU when it comes to use the ShadowPlay function.

Huh? A brand-new DICK MOVE from nvidia? Or is it really-really-really needed?

Its not needed at all, but now I am quite interested in why -cpu host does not work!
The Nvidia cpu check for Gefore Experience came in version 340.52 I believe(the same driver where we had to use kvm=off).
The ShadowPlay function worked before with -cpu Haswell

Re: KVM VGA-Passthrough using the new vfio-vga support in kernel =>3.9

Hi everyone smile

For those who have only one USB controller onboard (Like me with my X99-Deluxe motherboard) , I did find a solution .

I bought this expansion card :

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K9Q … UTF8&psc=1

And it gave me FOUR SEPERATE USB controllers (each controller is a seperate 5gbps channel) :

0f:00.0 USB controller: Renesas Technology Corp. uPD720202 USB 3.0 Host Controller (rev 02)
10:00.0 USB controller: Renesas Technology Corp. uPD720202 USB 3.0 Host Controller (rev 02)
11:00.0 USB controller: Renesas Technology Corp. uPD720202 USB 3.0 Host Controller (rev 02)
12:00.0 USB controller: Renesas Technology Corp. uPD720202 USB 3.0 Host Controller (rev 02)

And I could assign each one to a seperate VM using VFIO , and its working like a charm !

Hope this help . smile

Thanks for sharing.  Does the PCIe switch on the card support ACS or do you require the ACS override for this device?

No it doesn't . I had to recompile a mainline kernel with ACS patch , otherwise it did go into a large group along with other onboard controllers (Ethernet and others) .

Could you pastebin/pm me the full lspci -vvv from your X99 box?  I've been asking Intel whether we need ACS quirks for that chipset but haven't gotten an answer yet.  Thanks.

Right, it looks like the USB card does have ACS, it's the fault of the PCH root ports on the chipset that you're getting things grouped together:

That ASMedia PCIe switch does not have ACS support (not surprising), so any devices below it will always be grouped, but the PLX switch does, so if we could quirk the PCH root ports it would break up that grouping.

One more request, please report "lspci -ns 00:1c." so we have the device IDs for those root ports.  Thanks.

One more request, please report "lspci -ns 00:1c." so we have the device IDs for those root ports.  Thanks.

The patch is trivial, it looks just like the one for X79, but with your device IDs obviously:

http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel … 141fca8e23

The hard part is getting Intel to verify that the PCH root ports are isolated from one another.

Will we see X99 quirks added to mainline soon ?

I'm in no hurry , I can wait until 3.19 .

Re: KVM VGA-Passthrough using the new vfio-vga support in kernel =>3.9

Hi, I have been trying to use virsh to install Windows 8.1. However I couldn't manage to load the virtio.iso drivers. How do I need to edit the XML file so Virtio drivers are loaded too once Windows 8.1 installations starts? It doesn't ask me for the drivers ...

thanks a lot!!

No, these are the processor based root ports.  Intel does not seem to have any intention of providing a statement regarding isolation or procedure to configure isolation of client processor root ports.  Note that while the quirk for PCH root ports is trivial, the code that it enables modifies the chipset configuration to enforce isolation between ports.  Client processors include Core i5/i7 in this case (no VT-d on i3).  Xeon processors support ACS on the processor root ports with the exception of the E3-1200 series.  Intel even went so far as to provide a specification update regarding these (http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/pu … update.pdf)

HSW2. Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT) Clarification
Section 3.1 will be modified to include the following paragraph:
It is recommended to avoid device direct assignment to Virtual Machines in virtualized
environments with this processor due to the lack of Access Control Services (ACS)
support in PCI-Express root ports. Some Operating Systems may check for ACS support
and potentially disable direct device assignment (that is, affects SR-IOV setup/
configuration within the server) as well.

While this is for the E3-1200 v3, I tend to assume it applies to all E3-1200 processors and the root port logic from your processor is probably shared with that processor series even if it's a Core processor.

I cannot advise using the ACS override in this case because we have no indication from the hardware vendor that there is any isolation between these root ports, nor do I have any basis to quirk ACS support for these devices upstream.

Re: KVM VGA-Passthrough using the new vfio-vga support in kernel =>3.9

You need to make sure you are using virtio disk in xml, then add ide cd-rom with virtio-drivers... like here

<disk type='file' device='disk'>
      <driver name='qemu' type='raw' cache='none' io='native'/>
      <source file='/mnt/hdd2/win8.img'/>
      <target dev='vda' bus='virtio'/>
      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x02' slot='0x03' function='0x0'/>
    </disk>
    <disk type='file' device='cdrom'>
      <driver name='qemu' type='raw'/>
      <source file='/mnt/hdd/INSTALL/en_windows_8.1_professional_vl_with_update_x64_dvd_4065194.iso'/>
      <target dev='hda' bus='ide'/>
      <readonly/>
      <address type='drive' controller='0' bus='0' target='0' unit='0'/>
    </disk>
    <disk type='file' device='cdrom'>
      <driver name='qemu' type='raw'/>
      <source file='/mnt/hdd/INSTALL/virtio-win-0.1-81.iso'/>
      <target dev='hdc' bus='ide'/>
      <readonly/>
      <address type='drive' controller='0' bus='1' target='0' unit='0'/>
    </disk>

At windows setup, when it asks where to install, choose load driver and then point it to mounted cd-rom with viritio drivers.
