Just a basic/quick question re. thread topic - am currently using kernel26 current/recently set up my mkinitrd.conf/added the noupgrade setting for mkinitrd to pacman.conf - everything's working fine - given the above, do we have to do anything regards the initrd we we upgrade our kernel?

No you don't, when you update your kernel pacman will call mkinitrd automatically in order to make your initrd image in /boot, but if pacman has updated mkinitrd package, then you might want to check /etc/mkinitrd.conf.pacnew as you requested *NOT* to overwrite...
