Weird UEFI-releated 3.17.1 kernel bug (rtc-efi?)

Yesterday I updated to the last core/linux kernel, and I'm having a weird behaviour that leads to a complete system lock a minute or two after booting, but only on cold boots (i.e. plugging the  AC adapter, turning on the machine and booting the kernel, not on reboots).

Then I've had to turn off the system, because it completely froze.

The funny thing is, cold boots on an lts kernel are absolutely fine, and the system works; if then I reboot (the same happens after booting on windows then rebooting) and start the 3.17 kernel, it just works fine, without no issues on dmesg.

My idea is that the issue is in rtc-efi, because on a correct, well working 3.17 boot I've got

I've an ASUS N56VZ laptop with an i7 3610QM CPU, last microcode, last EFI firmware installed since last year (r217).

Yesterday I also added the intel-ucode package and initrd to my kernels, but I can't see how this could be involved with this especially because 3.14 works correctly.

OK, I found the problem, in 3.17 the module rtc-efi has been added, and it looks like it's not playing nicely with my uefi (glitchy UEFIs are really common sadly).

Blacklisting it fixes the problem, but it doesn't seem to me a good solution - especially because the "old" CMOS RTC driver still works nicely and with no issue.

I'm running a new Ausu X553MA laptop since last week. It's a uefi system so I'm using gummiboot and at every boot there is a kernel hang, sometimes it hangs while starting udev, others it's while starting dbus. Looking through the journal there's a kernel oops while loading the rtc_efi module.

The workaround suggested solves the bootup problems but I still can't shutdown properly. now there's a message from cgroup

 cgroup : option or name mismatch, new: 0x0 "", old: 0x4 "systemd

I don't think we ever found a solution for this one. I still get it and it's not breaking anything as far as I'm aware.

The more pressing issue is that you're still having issues shutting down... Anything else new in the logs?

There are no logs, systemd kills the journal process before this happens. There's an actual powering off message then the cgroup message but nothing else.
I'm going to enable debug shell to see what ouput there is.

Been running debug shell but there's no unusual ouput. When the system hangs, the keyboard is unresponsive so I can't switch ttys or type commands.

TL;DR : Add xhci-hci to modules in mkinitcpio.conf and rebuild the initramfs.

Finally fixed out my shutdown problem. It seems that my uefi system tried (and failed) to have the kernel load xhci-hci, so at shutdown, the system was trying to unload a module that had not been loaded properly. Simple fix was to add xhci-hci to the modules array in mkinitcpio.conf and rebuild the initramfs.
