Discovering Linux Display devices over ethernet

Hi,

i have been thinking lately that the whole "casting" market is doing things a bit weirdly. why do I have to stick a wifi only chromecast on my display/smartTV/dotMatrixPrinter or soundbox in order to propagate media in a quite hackish way. What if I just could "discover" rendering devices like my PCs discover cups printers and my TV & Playstation discovers media servers?

What I am thinking about is devices that broadcast their capabilities, are discovered by hubs which in turn push data their way.

Has anybody found software that can do this? Idealy I would do this on a level where xrandr and gnome would identify video renderers as displays and pulse would identify audio renderers as output devices.

My searches on google have not been helpful for this so if any members would like to share their knowledge I'm glad to hear it :-)

I'm pretty sure this is what upnp is for. That is the same protocol your tv&ps find media-servers with, and I'm pretty sure it handles rendering devices as well
