Boot time goes from seconds to minutes with udev and systemd

A few weeks ago updated and saw that on reboot I was getting messages from systemd that it was waiting for all my LVM partitions, and then finally that:
'A start job is running for udev Wait for Complete Device Initialization'

This has never happened before and I can't find any information about it in dmesg.

Here is my fstab:

#
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
#
# <file system>	<dir>	<type>	<options>	<dump>	<pass>

# Windows

I've been digging around for a few weeks and I can't find anything and my boot time is really slow.

Re: Boot time goes from seconds to minutes with udev and systemd

Is it possible it is the LVM package itself?  Down grade it and see what happens.  Worst case you'll have to chroot in and re-up the LVM app again.  Did you upgrade to a new kernel at that time?  If it is the 3.17.x kernel you may need to downgrade that instead or as well.

Re: Boot time goes from seconds to minutes with udev and systemd

I will switch to the LTS kernel and downgrade LVM to see what happens. Thank you for the tip!

Re: Boot time goes from seconds to minutes with udev and systemd

Thank you so much for your help!
Although my problem was fixed completely with the systemd update 217-6. I've only booted once though, I will keep checking.

Thanks again!

Re: Boot time goes from seconds to minutes with udev and systemd

So it times out (taking 3 minutes) then says

[FAILED] Failed to start udev Wait for Complete Device Initialization.
See "systemctl status systemd-udev-settle.service" for details
[DEPEND] Dependency failed for ACPI event daemon

so I ran

systemctl status systemd-udev-settle

with this output:

What can I do?

Re: Boot time goes from seconds to minutes with udev and systemd

Check https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … leshooting , also next time post complete logs, not partial snippets.

Often the messages that help to solve an error are not close to where the error is reported in the log, but much earlier.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: Boot time goes from seconds to minutes with udev and systemd

I too have seen the message at boot, udev waiting for 3min for something followed by failure. However except from prolonging boot time there seems to be no other effect and i've rebooted only two or three times in last month and unfortunately have no time to dig into it.

This is amusing since, by your own logs, you're already using the LTS kernel. I'd suggest the opposite -- use a newer kernel. It won't have this problem.

OK I gave that advice and it was obviously in error.  My apologies to all and, despite feeling like an asshat, I'm also glad someone got some amusement from this mistake.

Re: Boot time goes from seconds to minutes with udev and systemd

Thanks @illegalprime -- the steps you provided helped me further quite a bit in tracking down the exact same issue.
I managed to fix this by masking the service:

# systemctl mask systemd-udev-settle

I found the solution from here (cheers @Carl Karl!):

Re: Boot time goes from seconds to minutes with udev and systemd

Yeah! Masking it did work! Thank you so much @marttt! So this is this a real bug?
Either way masking it did work, so I'm happy.
