The tool allows querying modem status without interrupting active PPP connection, and to some extent controlling the modem.
Currently supported stuff: signal strength, some network info, radio on/off, GPS on/off/info, modem reset.
On a lower level, the tool implements Sierra's CnS protocol and can run almost any query, assuming the user knows what to ask and how to interpret replies.
My own capabilities are limited by an old and somewhat broken MC5725, and I don't think I will get me anything newer to play with any time soon.
So it would be great to hear any reports for newer devices, especially MC7xxx, MC8xxx. Sierra docs say it should work, but that's just docs.

CnS is the protocol SIerra Wireless Manager uses. Within reasonable limits, it should be safe for the modem. I hope
Minor warning: CnS is not DM, it's Sierra-specific and won't work for generic Qualcomm devices like Gobi2k.
ModemManager only uses DM as far as I can tell. There should have been limited CnS support in MM at some point I think, but I can't find it in current version.
And then again, not everyone uses ModemManager.
