No valid device and/or element

Hello everyone,
I am fairly new to Arch Linux, and have some trouble getting the sound working. I use ALSA and i have downloaded the alsa-utils and unmuted the channels using amixer. But when i hold the cursor over the icon in the menu bar it says "No valid device and/or element." I have seached for a post by someone with the same problem, but cant seem to find any. I might be overseeing something really simple or basic here, but I cant figure it out.
Please help!

Re: No valid device and/or element

When I run speaker-test it says:

speaker-test 1.0.28

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory
