Issue after reinstalling with nomodeset

After reinstalling arch, after a brief flirtation with Windows for around a week, I have an issue. Arch won't boot without nomodeset specified in the boot parameters. The screen will just hang during the boot process at some point. My thinking is that it appears to hang as it tries to change the resolution with KMS but is failing for some reason, giving me a frozen output. This is my 3rd or 4th time installing archlinux on this laptop and have had no issues like this previously. I even tried using an older version (that I knew worked) in case it was some issue with the newest kernel but no dice unfortunately. Intel graphics card btw. Any ideas?

Re: Issue after reinstalling with nomodeset

What card? What driver? Did you add the module to your initrd?

xf86-video-intel, its intel integrated graphics on a laptop so I'm not sure. I don't know how to do that to be honest. Never had to do anything before, its just worked straight out of the box.

See: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KM … _KMS_start

lspci will tell you what your card is.

Re: Issue after reinstalling with nomodeset

Anything interesting in the logs, dmesg, systemd's journal?

Systemd journal has error

arch-systemd-udevd[168]: worker [170] terminated by signal 11 (Segmentation fault)
arch-systemd-udevd[168]: worker [170] failed while handling '/devices/pci0000:00/000

lspci | grep VGA

00:02.0 VGA Compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)

Adding the module to mkinitcpio just made the boot process hang earlier.

Nothing of interest afaik. Journalctl is the only logging system I know of, heres the output from the failed boot i.e. without nomodeset

Re: Issue after reinstalling with nomodeset

Out of sheer, morbid curiosity, what happens if you get it to boot, then disable all networking services? I really am only grasping, but it seems there was a thread in the last day or two about the "Country" causing problems certain WiFi cards. It seems you have a similar error in your logs about your networking.

All of this is a SWAG, so YMMV.....

I'll try anything at this point. Which services should I disable? I'm not too comfortable doing this and don't want to break my system further. There was also an issue with the incorrect time being shown in arch for some reason and occasionally I get an error when connecting to the wifi with wifi-menu if that matters. I assumed they were unrelated and something I would fix once I resolved my original problem.

Re: Issue after reinstalling with nomodeset

The more I think about it, the more I think it won't work. But I can't answer that question exactly because I don't know what network tool you're using and need to disable. For example, wicd.service, or netctl, etc.

But again, the longer I ponder it, there really should be no reason to try this, as it a terrible SWAG on my part. And I'm sure you're right that the problem is unrelated to the WiFi issue you are experiencing.

Yeah I thought as such tbh. Still haven't found a solution. I can't even load the installer for the latest version of the arch iso (2014 11) I have to use one the one that I used last time I installed (2014 07) or I have the same issue as when trying to boot the OS (i.e. won't load without nomodeset specified)
