Hello everybody,
I am in the process of seting up arch just the way I want it. I recently set up dmix for ALSA and now any app that uses aRts won't produce sound. I was wondering if there was any way to get rid of arts, which is old and slow completely and just use ALSA.

aRTs is a KDE thing, isn't it? I don't use aRTs, just alsa, but I don't use KDE. If you're using KDE, I think you can turn aRTs off in the KDE control panel. Otherwise, we'll need more info on your system.

What apps do you have in mind?
I haven't actually run into any problems like that since I got rid of arts.

yes arts is a kde thing, and yes i use kde. I want it mostly for kopete notifications and to odd kde arcade game I want to play (i dont play them enough to justify finding clones of the same games that will run with alsa).

I read a while back that arts is no longer maintained.
A quick peek at the KDE Multimedia page says:
"With KDE 4 aRts will be discontinued and a new API to be used by KDE programs is currently under construction. This API will aim for higher integration of media frameworks into KDE without locking out other multimedia applications."

You can make the KDE system notification framework run without ALSA if you want, look here:

You mean, "run with ALSA", right? (not 'without')

It was sort of a combination of "with ALSA" and "without aRts"
