Weird scanner problem, no program works but vuescan

Today i installed my epson xp-201 printer/scanner to scan some photos. I was able to scan once, but when i want to scan another photo, it never worked again.
When i ran scanimage -L, i saw the scanner just once too, and it never appeared again. I changed the usb cable, and rebooted the system several times with same results.
But, vuescan works perfect. It's so weird...

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried as root? See my yesterday's post regarding a different Epson scanner which works only as root with xsane but is fine with vuescan.

I have been trying to find a solution for a scanner problem I have for a Canon LIDE 210 which won't work when plugged into a usb3 port but works fine when plugged into a usb2 port on an older machine - using xsane from GIMP.  I am going to try to test with vuescan but I wonder if your scanner was connected via a usb3 port? If so it might indicate a corresponding issue to the one that I had. I have seen a Ubuntu posting that vuescan worked where other scanning software didn't so I was interested to see if there is a common underlying cause here?

I tested vuescan today with my Canoscan LIDE 210 - and it works fine when connected to a laptop with USB3 connection, where the scanner jams solid with xsane.  This is interesting and seems to indicate a bug in xsane when using USB3.  Maybe it is worth putting in a bug report upstream to the sane-devel list.

Apologies if this is classified as thread necromancy, but this was extremely helpful! Such a simple thing fixed it for my Epson XP-215.

Having to do this as root is not exactly an ideal solution! However in my case I think that the problems are not yet triaged and there are many reported issues running scanners with usb3 ports on the machine they are connected to, with analogous posts on forums for a number of different linux distributions. I have also more recently been engaged in a developer thread on the xsane dev list and provided diagnostics as best I can, but it is still not clear whether there are issues with the usb code in the kernel, the libusb code or within sane itself.  I was able to get at the packet stream whilst the scanner failed using usb debugging and capturing the stream with wireshark. However the developers have not been able to tie down what the problem is so this is ongoing.

In your case it would be interesting to know if you were using a usb3 or a usb2 port on the computer?

In my case it is a usb2 port.

I tested using iscan, if that helps. The reason why is that my old printer/scanner, Epson SX-130, used to work without any problems and no need to run as root.

OK in that case your issue is a separate one to the problem of using usb3 ports.  I seem to remember some time back that there were issues with permissions that led to only being able to scan using root and not a normal user but I thought there were solutions posted in other threads to that issue. Perhaps a search will lead to the relevant threads? However have a look at the libusb section in http://linux.die.net/man/5/sane-usb
