ArchCK in Extra. ATI Drivers renamed (again).

My apologies. I have had to rename the ATI drivers a second time. Soon there will be driver packages in the repos for ArchCK as well, and I decided it was best to bite the bullet, and make the ati drivers concordant with this new naming scheme, rather than risk user confusion later on.

The new drivers are known as
ati-fglrx (kernel module for 2.6.15-ARCH)
ati-fglrx-archck (kernel module for 2.6.15-archck)
ati-fglrx-utils (xorg7 stuff and tools)

Hopefully later today, I will be uploading further modules using this naming scheme, including tiacx, ndiswrapper, madwifi, wlan-ng26 and others. This will not affect users currently using these modules, as the upgrade path will just bring in the new dependency of a -utils package.

I have also just moved ArchCK and mkinitramfs to extra. If you wish to use fbsplash, you need to install gensplashutils and initscripts-gensplash from community. They are no longer a dependency of mkinitramfs - you must install them yourself. If you already have them installed, then dont worry. You may need to reconfigure your /etc/mkinitramfs.conf for fbsplash

Again, my apologies, but it was needed to prevent user confusion later on down the road. The upgrade path isnt too difficult, and is one you can attempt when you are ready, the current ati-drivers have yet to be removed.

Well, with James being promoted to Dev, I was hoping that it was only a matter of time.

I must admit, I haven't used ArchCK for a while. I was having issues with ipw2200 wireless drivers always messing up. But I think I'll give it another go soon.

Re: ArchCK in Extra. ATI Drivers renamed (again).

I just have a small question regarding kernel26archck PKGBUILD, at the end you do

  # Setup depmod
  sed -i -e "s/KERNEL_VERSION=.*/KERNEL_VERSION=${_kernver}/g" $startdir/kernel26.install

why not changing the kernel26.install directly without patching it roll big_smile

this is being moved into all the modules and kernels. it's simply to ensure that the correct depmod call is made by not hard coding the kernel version in the install file. This is useful when people make a custom kernel based on that pkgbuild. It is somewhat redundant in ArchCK, but it does save me editing the .install file when i have to update 2.6.15 to 2.6.16 etc. smile

LOL arooaroo, you're disappointing me mate, Linux is always a Good and a perfect adventure, always change your way man big_smile

@iphitus can you please remove kernel26archck and mkinitramfs from testing, kernel archck is still version 5 and pacman not detecing version 6 coz testing is before extra in pacman.conf, same for mkinitramfs, so i suggest removing both from testing since it's in extra now smile

Thx

Re: ArchCK in Extra. ATI Drivers renamed (again).

Updated ati drivers packages do not work for me roll
I did pacman -S ati-drivers-archck (I`m using archck), it removed ati-drivers, ati-drivers-archck and installed ati-fglrx-utils, ati-fglrx-archck.

Now modprobe keeps telling me that module fglrx could not be found.

Even tried installing ati-fglrx (which didn`t give me any results of course).

Re: ArchCK in Extra. ATI Drivers renamed (again).

If you're gettin the module not found message, reinstall:

ati-fglrx if you are using -ARCH
ati-fglrx-archck if you are using -archck from the repos.

If the error persists, run depmod -a from within that kernel, and if the error persists then? it wont... shouldnt.

I've had confirmations of it running on archck, so i'm sure the packages are fine. I've double checked them, and the module is in them.

Re: ArchCK in Extra. ATI Drivers renamed (again).

shouldn't the depmod running in the .install file be doing that for these people?

Anyways, nice to see it all up in [extra]!

Re: ArchCK in Extra. ATI Drivers renamed (again).

ok, so i updated, again..

(EE) fglrx(0): incompatible kernel module detected - HW accelerated OpenGL will not work

that's from Xorg.0.log.

(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found
(WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver.
(WW) fglrx(0): ***********************************************
(WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed!                  *
(WW) fglrx(0): * (maybe driver kernel module missing or bad) *
(WW) fglrx(0): * 2D acceleraton available (MMIO)             *
(WW) fglrx(0): * no 3D acceleration available                *
(WW) fglrx(0): ********************************************* *
(WW) fglrx(0): Option "DisplaySize" is not used

are the warnings.

local/kernel26 2.6.15.4-2

which is the most recent kernel. Why isn't this working? This is getting ridiculous. Also i can't find fglrx in ABS so i can't recompile the module.

Yes, i know i can probably use abs and it now probably is a synchronization issue. But why aren't modules compiled on install as default anyway? Why do i have to know how to use abs, pkgbuilding, makepkg, traverse directories finding the right package and go through all that when i could just do pacman -S  X-kernel-module and have it work regardless of what kernel i would use..? What's the perceived problem here? Compilation of kernel-modules are super-fast, and if one isn't even assured that a kernel module works when one runs a current kernel; what's the point of having precompiled kernel modules??

sigh.. maybe what we need here is a tool like qpkg or something which enables the user to take a look at the pkgbuild first and incorporate needed kernel patches etc if needed to get the module compiling on that specific kernel.

if you don't think this is a good idea i want valid reasons.. not that "this isn't gentoo" or something else. As everyone else i want to make arch better smile

Re: ArchCK in Extra. ATI Drivers renamed (again).

I can't get the ArchCK kernel to work. Grub says "Error 15: File not found", and I can't figure out what I have done wrong.
/boot/grub/menu.lst seems allright

# (1) ArchCK
title Arch Linux [ArchCK]
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26archck root=/dev/hda1 vga=0x318 splash=silent,theme:darch quiet console=tty1 ro
initrd /boot/initramfs-2.6.15-archck.img
savedefault
boot

And I have changed the mkinitrams.conf to use fbsplash

# To use fbsplash/gensplash, you need to install gensplashutils and initscripts-gensplash from community.
# Add a theme to enable fbsplash, Try 'darch', it's included in the gensplashutils.
FBSPLASH_THEME=darch

# Resolution to use, 1024x768 will be used if left blank. Format is '1024x768'
FBSPLASH_RES=1024x768

and all is fine. Weird, but works for me smile

Re: ArchCK in Extra. ATI Drivers renamed (again).

Yay, now it works (except silent mode), but now I can't get any sound. I have all the modules loaded, so I really can't figure ot what the problem is.
I know I havn't said much, but maybe someone could give me an idea?

---EDIT---
I think I know how to solved it. I think should add "pci=routeirq", it may solved the sound issue.

---EDIT2---
Yes that solved the problem.
Now I want to know why the "silent mode" gives a black screen after all the initscripts.
Have any tried this?
