[Solved] No sound on my arch workstation (after update)

Hi,

I yesterday updated my workstation and installed linux 3.17.4. After a reboot, the sound magically disappeared wink In fact I don't know, if it's related to the updated, it was coincedented but may be not related.

I found the alse information script, the output can be seen here:

http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=579e7 … 7f90c8b6f5

I can provide an update log if it helps.

Thankfully

If the only thing you changed is that you updated the Linux kernel then yes, the new kernel is the problem. You can verify this by downgrading the kernel and seeing if sound works again.

What soundcard are you using? Are using anything other than ALSA (PulseAudio, OSS, JACK...)?

Re: [Solved] No sound on my arch workstation (after update)

It is not only the linux kernel, but i just tested downgrading and it didn't has any effect.

I am not using Pulseaudio or somthing like this, the log says i have jack installed but not running. The Soundcard is an HDA Intel PCH with an ALC269VB Codec. I tried to figure out my last steps i made before the sound stopped working. From the log i know, that yesterday after the update, the workstation was rebooted. I have not changed anything in the configuration yesterday so, it has to be connected to the update. This is the pacman log:

Re: [Solved] No sound on my arch workstation (after update)

Holy cow, that's a LOT of updates! If possible, I suggest you try to update more often. smile

There are quite a few packages there that are related to sound, but I don't see any immediate problems.

Does sound work in any application? What applications do you use that have sound? (For example, I use Firefox, Flash, mpv, and DeaDBeeF.)

What type of connection are you using? (For example, sometimes I use standard 3.5mm audio jack and other times I use HDMI.)

Yipp, was on vacation big_smile

I have a little update, yesterday i tried a live linux from usb and the sound works. A colleague tiped me off that there is a program called speaker-test which said:

╭─s4bleknight@skpc ~
╰─$ speaker-test

speaker-test 1.0.28

playback device is default
Stream-Parameter are 48000 Hz, S16_LE, 1 Channel
Using 16 octaves pink noise
ALSA lib pcm_equal.c:236:(_snd_pcm_equal_open) Problem with control file .alsaequal.bin.
Error open device: -1, Operation not permitted

I tried sudo speaker-test which worked fine and i could hear the pink noise.

What I think of now is that this is a permission problem, currently my user is in the following groups:

╭─s4bleknight@skpc ~
╰─$ groups s4bleknight 1 ↵
disk lp network audio users

By that, i have no sound in any application, wether crhomium, nor firefox or spotify and I use the 3.5mm jack on the mainboard.

Tried it, without changes. I would like to mention, that the problem seems significantly different to mine. He had the problem: Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory, whilst min is: Playback open error: -1, Operation not permitted. Also he changed his card id to the second one, which is not possible, because in my workstation, the second card is the nvidia graphics card hdmi port, which might work but would not solve the problem at all.

Currently I'm thinking that my user for whatever reason does not have permission to playback sound, but I don't know how to change this.

Re: [Solved] No sound on my arch workstation (after update)

Try as me

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Paste

options snd_hda_intel index=0

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=190602

Where Karte 0 = index=0 = Karte 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], Gerät 0: ALC269VB Analog [ALC269VB Analog]

Well, alsaequal and the new caps package don't go well.
The reason for this must be something amongst the recent changes introduced with the new caps package release.
I suspect it's got something to do with the ladspa ports.
Try to downgrade caps to 0.9.23 or use mbeq from swh-plugins package or don't use alsaequal at all.
And hope that someone will provide a patch to make alsaequal work with the new caps.

By the way, someone has already indicated that the new caps package and alsaequal pairing might be problematic. See the comments section of alsaequal AUR page.

That's it. I downgraded caps to 0.9.23 and it's working now, thank you.

See the comments section of alsaequal AUR page.

mpd/ncmpcpp played audio, but mpv, mplayer and tv-viewer all failed with audio. It was really weird and I thought I was in for a long stretch of finding a work around. Thanks, that downgrading caps did it for me too. smile
