I have this desktop computer that "freezes" seemingly at random. The mouse pointer can't be moved, the keyboard's caps lock and num lock LEDs don't work and neither does switching to a virtual terminal with [ctrl]+[alt]+[F1]. The magic SysRq+REISUB also does not work. Switching off the power and rebooting solves the problem.
So far I have ruled out the graphics card (removed), RAM (memtest showed no problems) and the HDD (replaced with a brand new one).
I also had this problem with previous installations of Debian and Ubuntu on this machine.
Now, it seems to me, that the freezes often occur after moving the mouse or plugging in a usb pen drive. On the virtual console I also saw kernel messages popping up about the mouse being un- and replugged, although I was not even touching it.
Could this crashing be caused by flaky usb ports? In which logs do I have to search for this and for what should I look out?
Thanks in advance for helping me with this mystery!
