Indeed, enabling media.mediasource in about:config and trying to play html5 1080p YT clip crashed firefox immediately.

Does not happen for me. I encourage you to make a bug report.

As for HD video on youtube in general, getting 1080p with HTML5 requires MSE support (media source extensions) that Firefox doesn't implement yet.

That is simply not true, i just watched a HD video on youtube in 1080p with HTML5 and it worked fine. Could it be that your information is outdated?
The relevant bug report that says  "Implement enough of MSE to run the YouTube MSE player" has the status "RESOLVED FIXED".

If you're running a nightly, it's possible enough works already. I did say it got enabled by default a few days ago, so the Mozilla devs must think they're close. But there's still more than 50 bugs open: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/showdepend … resolved=1. Doing "fancy" stuff like lots of seeking around, changing from and to HD during playback and such, that's where the lack of polish is.

Also, important thing - MSE & VP9 is more complete than MSE & H264. So watching 1080p VP9 video is in much better shape than 1080p h264 video.
