[SOLVED] Do I need to install Codecs if I use VLC and Clementine?

I realize that this might be a stupid question but I just want to be sure.

Do I need to install the Codecs listed on the Arch Wiki if I'm using VLC (for video) and Clementine (for audio)? If not, then is there any situation you can think of where I might need those codecs installed even after I have the necessary media apps?

What codecs and wiki page are you referring to?

Do you have a video or audio file that doesn't play correctly? If not, then you're all set! big_smile

All the relevant codecs needed to play videos and audio files listed on Codecs.

After installing VLC and ALSA, some videos played correctly while others opened with incorrect resolutions and a screeching and tearing sounds.

Just looking at the dependencies for VLC, it is clear that VLC pulls in some codecs so that you can get by with what one might expect to play with VLC. These dependencies aren't all the codecs you might utilise, so you might have to install additional codecs as you go (such as flac). It certainly sounds like you might need to install a couple for the videos which aren't playing properly though.

Back to your original question, the answer is it depends...

No. vlc installs ffmpeg, which is all vlc can use. There is no way to opt-in more codecs afterwards. To be honest, this sounds more like corrupt video files, with wrong aspect ratio. The audio part might be a samplerate issue, but thats wild guessing.

Do those video files play correctly in other video players?

If you want to find out more information about them, play them using "mpv", then copy and paste the terminal output here so we can check it out. smile

For the other part of your question, clementine needs the gstreamer0.10-plugins, as mentioned by the optional dependencies
